10 Simple Ways to Show Love

Many people seem to take elaborate steps to show their love on Valentine’s Day. And it’s no wonder since approximately $13.19 billion is spent on Valentine’s Day yearly, and more than 195 million roses are produced for this the day of love.

But fancy gifts and expensive dinners not only take a hit on your pocketbook, they do not always speak from the heart. After all, isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is all about? At one time, it wasn’t about aisles of sappy Hallmark cards, overindulging in a high-fat five-course meal, and standing in an endless line at See’s Candy. It used to be about the simple act of showing love to one another.

To get back to the ‘heart’ of the matter, here are 10 simple and powerful ways to show your love without breaking the bank:

  1. Make a handwritten note or card. If it’s for a family member, leave a handwritten (preferably not typed) note on their pillow, or car windshield as a surprise.
  2. Give a hug. Give that special someone a hug, and tell him or her how much they mean to you.
  3. Do a selfless act of kindness, such as record their must-watch TV show, wash their car, give a deep tissue massage, or make a compilation CD of their favorite songs.
  4. Plant a shrub, plant, flower or small tree. If this is too much of a hassle, pick out their favorite flower or plant for planting in their own yard. Every time they see it, they’ll think fondly of your thoughtfulness.
  5. Sing them a song, or write a poem. You can serenade your valentine in a recorded video, or even do a “Why I Love You” presentation (there are some cool effects in PowerPoint, or similar presentation programs).
  6. Offer to care for the kids or babysit so he or she can take a much-needed break.
  7. Do the thing you didn’t want to do. Yep, if your spouse or significant other has been riding you to clean the garage, closet, or organize something, do it!
  8. Make their favorite meal. Nothing says ‘I love you’ than an amazing ‘from the heart’ home-cooked meal.
  9. For consenting adults, wear or pick up a sexy piece of new lingerie. If a new lingerie purchase is not in your budget, then put the kids to bed early, or send them to your in-law’s house, and set a romantic mood with candles and music.
  10. Just say, “I love you.” This, of course, is the most important of all.
