A ‘Suite’ Staycation at DoubleTree Doheny Beach

We stayed as a guest of the resort

Staycations are the best kind of vacations. Orange County is its own little paradise, and instead of traveling afar to find a beautiful paradise, we try to enjoy as much of the beauty of Orange County by having as many staycations as possible. Our favorite staycations are ones spent by the beach, and our recent staycation at the DoubeTree Doheny Beach was one we will remember forever.

The weather was perfect the weekend of our staycation. We arrived on a Friday afternoon at the DoubleTree Doheny Beach and checked into our ocean view suite for the weekend. Within minutes of arriving at the resort, my children had changed into their swimsuits and were ready to go across the street to play at the beach.

The beach is just steps away from the resort and a great place for families to splash in the water, surf, or build a sand castle. There is also a campground right on the beach where families can ride bikes around the campground.

After spending a couple of hours at the beach, we returned to the resort for a little pool time fun. My kids splashed and played in the pool until it was almost time to get ready for dinner. The DoubleTree has a highly-acclaimed restaurant on site, so we didn’t have to drive anywhere for dinner after a long day in the warm sun.

We changed our clothes and walked downstairs to Doheny Surf Restaurant where our family went on an unforgettable epicurean adventure. Our evening ended with the kids have a late night swim in the pool before drifting off to sleep to the sound of the crashing ocean waves and with cool ocean breezes floating into our room.

One of my kid’s favorite things to do when traveling is to have breakfast in bed. I surprised them the next morning by ordering all their favorite dishes with the resort’s room service. The kids squealed with delight when they heard a knock on the door and opened it to find their breakfast was being delivered. We savored every bite of the delicious breakfast and then got ready to have an unforgettable day exploring the area around the DoubleTree Doheny Beach.

Our morning started by walking across the street to explore the Doheny Beach nature center and butterfly garden. The kids loved learning about the ocean life from the volunteers working at the nature center and touching the sea life in the simulated tide pools. Behind the nature center is a beautiful butterfly garden where my children saw gorgeous butterfly floating in the air around the garden.

After our walk to the nature center, we returned to the resort to get ready for some sailing lessons with Westwind Sailing. We drove over to Dana Point Harbor where our family took a one-hour sailing lesson. During the lesson, my children fell in love with the sport of sailing and had a memorable experience thanks to the talented instructors. When our lesson was complete, we ended our time by the harbor by walking around and taking a short tour of the giant pirate ship that is docked in the harbor.

On our way back to the resort, we made a quick stop for margaritas and burritos at the famous Olamendi’s Restaurant. The food at Olamendi’s is always delicious, and it was the perfect late lunch to enjoy after an afternoon sailing.

We finished our afternoon enjoying the resort. My husband and I relaxed on a lounge chair, while our children played in the swimming pool. The kids swam until the sun began to set, and then we got ready to have dinner at Coastal Kitchen in Dana Point. Coastal Kitchen is a short drive from the resort, and quickly became our new favorite family restaurant to get healthy and delicious food in an upscale family-friendly ambiance.

After dinner, we returned to the resort where we put the kids to bed, and then went to the MoQUILA Agave Lounge for a nightcap.

On our last day of the staycation the kids slept in, and then we had a light breakfast at the resort restaurant. My older kids went for a short bike ride around Doheny Beach State Park and then our family got ready to spend the rest of our day at the beach.

When looking for the perfect place to have a seaside family staycation, the DoubleTree Doheny Beach is the perfect place to create memories that will last a lifetime. Reservations are available online or by calling (949) 661-1100.
