Enjoying Your Visit
Perhaps one of the best characteristics of Altisima Park is the large play structured that is completely protected by a shade cover.  With two small kids, I have visited more that my share of parks, and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a park protected quite like this, which is priceless on hot summer days (and summer days in Rancho can be hot!)

Because the park is situated at the top of the bluff overlooking Oso reservoir, it offers not only a great view of everything north of about Irvine all the way to the coast, but also a nice breeze, especially in the afternoon.  I’d say it’s about the coolest place to be in Rancho in the summer.

Under the shade cover, there are two play structures: one larger one with two slides, a rock wall, and climbing space, and a smaller one with two slides and a tunnel perfect for toddlers to hide in.

There are also two swings in the shaded area.

The equipment varies enough to keep kids of different ages happily entertained.

The surface of the play area is part cushy rubber material and part sand.  So bring your sand toys!

Aside from the play area, Altisima park has several other amenities to offer. There is a plethora of grass space on the two baseball fields along with some nice areas with trees and picnic tables on the slopes surrounding the main fields.

There area also two lighted tennis courts, however, they are accessible only via access card available to Rancho residents.

There is a large covered picnic area with barbecue facilities.  This is available to the public, but only reservable through the city by Rancho residents.  It is generally only only busy in the height of nice weather on the weekends.  And there are many other single picnic tables scattered throughout the park.

The lighted tennis courts supposedly have pick up games during the evening hours, but during the day, they seem deserted.

The last main amenity at Altisima is the swimming pool. However, again this is accessible only via access card available to Rancho residents. So don’t bother packing your suit unless you have one of those trusty little access cards.

Likewise the bathrooms, while left open sometimes, require an access card to enter.  The lack of bathrooms available to the public is probably the only drawback of this park.

But parking is a breeze; plenty is available.

There is an approximately half mile walking loop around the park that is nice for some exercise if you take a couple loops, or for bike riding for the kids.

All in all, Altisima park is a beautiful park with some great views – mountains to ocean!  Take the kids, with some sand toys or bikes, or maybe pack a picnic to enjoy the great sunset view on a clear night. No matter what you choose to do here, you will enjoy your time!
