Amazon Prime’s Just Add Magic
We were invited as a guest for a private screening of Amazon’s Just Add Magic.
When my daughter found out we were going to attend a private screening and Q & A with the stars of Just Add Magic, she was giddy with excitement. Not only were we going to get to see a private screening of episode 1 of season 2 but also were treated to tasty treats, a DIY station for decorating aprons, and a chance to talk to the cast.
Amazon’s Just Add Magic series is a favorite in our house. Being a child of the 70’s, my parents didn’t have to search for a “family friendly” show for us to watch. There was pretty much one on every channel, (all seven channels), at any time throughout the day and evening.
Fast forward 40 years and finding a “family friendly” series that is appropriate for an 8-year-old and one my husband won’t mind watching was almost next to impossible. That is until we found Amazon’s Just Add Magic.
Just Add Magic centers around Kelly Quinn and her two best friends, Darbie and Hannah. The 3 BFF’s find Kelly’s grandmother’s cookbook in the attic and soon realize the recipes inside aren’t your typical “how to make apple pie” recipe but actually come to find out they have the power of magic when making these special recipes.
The casting of these young actresses is spot on! Olivia Sanabia as Kelly Quinn; Aubrey Miller as Hannah and Abby Donnelly as Darbie bring these best friends to life on screen and during the Q & A, we found out that they are BFF’s outside of the show as well.
Olivia, Aubrey, and Abby were all asked what do they feel makes Just Add Magic stand out against other shows. Olivia Sanabia said that the story lines are all family friendly and the stories have the BFF’s all working together and that makes it appropriate for everyone in the family. Abby & Aubrey both said that the bond between the characters is more than a friendship, they are family. The show incorporates the character, Kelly’s family, (i.e. her grandmother and her grandmother’s two friends), but characters, Hannah and Darbie feel as though Kelly’s grandmother is their grandmother as well.
The series is about friendship and girl power, and the actors were asked how they felt about being positive role models for young girls. Aubrey Miller, who plays Hannah, said that she loves how all three of the characters are respectful to their parents and other adult characters on the show. They set a good example of being polite, respectful and courteous. Abby Donnelly said that it is a dream to play a character that young girls can relate to and also, reiterated Aubrey’s thoughts on how the characters in the show are respectful to the adults.
When asked about what can we expect from the trio in season 2 they said that the characters are definitely thrown for a loop, and it will be a huge test of their friendship but they come out stronger and closer than ever when all is said and done.
My daughter and I cannot wait for season 2. Be sure to catch Season 2 of Amazon’s Just Add Magic which airs on Friday, January 13th.
