Parents Guide to Teaching Children to have Quiet Time

Posted by on Aug 24, 2013 in Family | 1 comment

When was the last time you took time to just notice your breath and the beauty around you?  If you are like many busy families, it’s been a while.  Teaching your children about a daily quiet time can be a great way to help them find peace and restoration in their daily lives.  Here are three simple ideas to get your family started… 1. Set Expectations It’s important to set the expectations with your child before they get started.  For example, with young kids you may want to explain why a quiet time is important, how long they will be taking a quiet time and provide them with some independent activities to help them be successful.   For some children, it might also be helpful to use a timer and start with 10-15 minute sessions.  Some helpful independent quiet time...

Parents Guide for the Transition to Middle School

Posted by on Aug 19, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

The transition to middle school can be big step for everyone in the family, but with some simple preparations the journey can be a little easier. Here are three simple, yet helpful parenting tips to transition your son or daughter from elementary to middle school. Bring a Sense of Humor One important tip when transitioning to middle school is a sense of humor. When I mentioned to my 13 year old son that I was writing a piece about the transition to middle school, he said “You are now officially the mom in the the Dairy of a Wimpy Kid movie.” and I just laughed.  One of the biggest gifts you can give your son or daughter during this transition phase is a sense of humor and a very open heart. Of course you need to prepare them...

How to Prepare Children for Kindergarten

Posted by on Aug 17, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

How do you best prepare a child to go to their first day of school? It’s a day you will long remember and certainly a big step, but with a little preparation, you will both be on your way to a great day. Each child and parent has their own special personality and how they might react may vary depending on a variety of factors, but following these four simple steps can set the stage for a smooth transition for everyone. Prepare In Advance Is this a brand new school experience for your child? Or Is your child familiar with the school because they have a sibling in an older grade? If it’s a new school experience,  it would be helpful to spend some time at the school before school starts. During the summer, take a walk to...

Doggie Doo from Goliath Games

Posted by on Aug 16, 2013 in Toys | 0 comments

From the makers of Gooey Louie and Pop the Pig comes Doggie Doo!  Doggie Doo from Goliath Games is a great game for my kids, since they are always asking for a dog! It comes with everything you see here to feed and walk your dog and collect his poop! After you feed your dog, you roll the die to see how many times you squeeze the handle to help your doggie digest his food. It’s pretty noisy, all that digesting. The funny noises will keep your kids giggling!  Eventually the food makes its way through the doggie and out the end. And the kids think it is absolutely hilarious!  Keep feeding your doggie and collecting the poop!  The first person to collect 3 poops, wins!  To learn more, visit http://www.doggiedoogame.com/. How to Connect with your Children

Posted by on Aug 2, 2013 in Family | 0 comments

Would you like to feel great and have fun with your family this summer?  If you answered “Yes” , I have the magic answer for you.  Just do what your kids are doing, no questions asked, just do it. The other day, my 12 year old son was telling me about the different things he does for his junior lifeguard program and I was floored.  He said, “So after our running drills, we put on our swim fins and swim past the waves to the kelp beds. When we get there, we find an opening and just swim through kelp.  It’s so much fun!” When finished sharing, I said “Sounds fun, I wish I could do that.”  And then he said “You can. How about after junior guards you and I can swim out there and you can...

Tips to Foster Effective Communication in your Family

Posted by on Jul 31, 2013 in Family | 0 comments

I teach kids that we make our best choices when we understand where the other kid is coming from. Most parents hope their children develop this level of empathy and use it as a guide. But hope isn’t a parenting strategy. In my book, Teaching Kids to Be Good People, I help parents teach kids to develop empathy and respect for themselves and others. Effective communication is key to empathy training. These tips can improve communication in your family so your child becomes a more effective communicator and a better friend: 1.  Give kids time to decompress. When kids come home talk will flow more naturally after the shoes come off, food’s dished out, and everyone has had time to relax. 2. Show that you’re interested. We’re all a little distracted these days, but if we want kids...
