Behind the Scenes of the American Idol taping at The House of Blues
I attended as a guest of Ford
It was the summer of 2002 and I was living the single life in New York City when American Idol made its debut on television. Who doesn’t remember Kelly Clarkson winning that very first season? Fast forward twelve years and I am living in SoCal, the mom of an almost seven year old, and American Idol is about to premiere its 14th season. Had you told me all those years ago that I would be attending a live taping of the show I would have never believed you. Well, here I was at The House of Blues in LA, enjoying an evening of talented entertainment and having a behind the scenes look.
The House of Blues stage had been taken over by the iconic American Idol sign and the Ricky Minor band. This is an intimate setting, allowing for only a small live audience, three white seats for the judges, the technical crew and other staff and a limited number of VIP guests in a special viewing area. This must also mean a less intimidating setting for the budding artists in what has become known on the show as “Hollywood Week”.
Ryan Seacrest kicked off the show with his usual enthusiasm and that sparkle in his eye (I’ve seen it, it’s really there). Enter the judges: the beautiful Jennifer Lopez (yes, she really is that beautiful), the always smiling Harry Connick Jr. and the very cute Keith Urban (I admit my weakness). In between performances, you could see them talking amongst themselves and I was trying to determine from their expressions how they felt about the acts because during this taping, contrary to other shows, they did not critique the performances.
Without giving away any spoilers I can let you know that the talent was great. Many artists were playing an instrument and more often than not, the whole House of Blues was swinging to the beat. The judges even gave some standing ovations so there is much to look forward to when season XIV airs.
This evening reminded me of what a wonderful platform American Idol is for aspiring vocalists. The new Kelly Clarkson was among those on stage at The House of Blues. Who will it be? American Idol season XIV kicks off on January 7th, 2015 on the Fox network. I can’t wait.
