Best OC Swim School: Evolution Swim Academy
Evolution Swim Academy, founded by two-time olympian Felipe Delgado, is one of Orange County’s top learn to swim schools. The program was developed to offer multiple learning levels where with each level a student gets closer to becoming a safer swimmer.
In addition to swim lessons and parent and me swim lessons, they also offer stroke development and stroke technique lessons, introductory swim team, water polo and summer camps.
Evolution Swim Academy serves many cities throughout Orange County, including Aliso Viejo, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo and Rancho Mission Viejo. My 18 month old took Mommy and Me lessons at the state of the art Mission Viejo location and loved it! The staff is welcoming, and the teachers are friendly and know how to work with kids. The Mommy and Me class was a small group class that incorporated a few songs and water play into what are truly the beginnings of learning how to swim. Breath control, jumping into the pool and turning around to find the edge, crab walking along the side of the pool, and floating were the primary concentrations of the class. Most swimmers were between ages one and two, and the class program was a perfect level for them, and moved quickly to hold their attention throughout the half hour lesson.
The best part is they really just couldn’t wait to jump in the pool each time!
One aspect of the Mommy and Me program I particularly valued was Evolution Swim’s makeup/drop in policy. Swimmers in the program could do a make up class or just drop into an extra class any day of the week (space permitting in the class). Evolution Swim believes that at the youngest ages, exposure to the pool is a key ingredient, so they’ve made a way to highly expose your little swimmer, should you wish. They also know that one of the biggest bummers is to wake a sleeping baby for swim (or any other) class, so if schedules get in the way, not to worry, just drop in to another class sometime. I thought this flexibility was a great value!
The facility at the Mission Viejo location was one of the best I’ve personally experienced with swim lessons. They boast a large waiting/viewing area, where parents who have independent swimmers can view lessons. Adjacent to this waiting area is a children’s room with toys, tents and seating where kids who aren’t swimming, but waiting for brother or sister to take a class, can play. As a Mom of three, who very often juggles waiting siblings at various activities, I particularly appreciated this aspect of the facility that caters to the whole family.Once you go through the doors to the swim area, there is a large restroom and changing room, complete with three baby changing stations, hooks to hang wet items, and a hair dryer. Cubbies are located outside the restroom to store personal items during lessons. There are three showers on the pool deck for a quick rinse after lessons. Towel service is also available if you happen to forget your towel, or just decide you don’t want to deal with lugging one back and forth in the first place. Evolution Swim has definitely thought of just about everything!
The water at the indoor Mission Viejo facility is set at a balmy 90 degrees, and the air at 80 degrees; so even on the coldest of Southern California days, swimming here won’t be an issue.Living in the beach community that we do, the life skill of swimming is one of the best gifts we can give our children. From the very youngest swimmers in Mommy and Me classes, to the competitive swimmers on teams, Evolution Swim Academy has something for everyone in the family.
