Children across the nation will celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22nd. The one-day event will focus on living sustainable lifestyles in order to treasure our precious natural resources. While we encourage everyone to celebrate with their children on April 22nd, families are invited to continue educating their children at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano.

In anticipation of Earth Day, our family attended their special Earth Day celebration earlier this month. Hundreds of local parents and children came together to learn about sustainability and easy, beneficial ways that children can make an impact on our Earth.

Children participated in Earth Day crafts, learned about water conservation and ate delicious food from Chipotle. Chipotle has sponsored a learning station at The Ecology Center where children can learn about the importance of knowing where their food is coming from with an interactive game.

Our children were most inspired by the event at the water conservation learning station. With our children learning about the serious drought while watching CNN Student News, they were eager to learn what they can do to help. They came home from the event wanting us to get rain gutters on our house so that we can collect rain water with a rain barrel. It is such a simple way to collect and reuse precious rainwater, and we cannot wait to make our home more eco-friendly.

Once we were done enjoy the celebration at The Ecology Center, we walked next door to South Coast Farms where we purchased fresh local fruits and vegetables to use at home throughout the week.

Everywhere your children turn there is another learning opportunity on conservation at The Ecology Center. The Ecology Center is a transformed farmhouse from the 1870’s and is the oldest wooden structure in San Juan Capistrano. The farmhouse is a reminder for all who visits about the centers focus on preserving the past and cultivating a more abundant future.
