Earth Day Events in Orange County

We all love it. We all live in it. It’s our Earth – our environment – our home. It’s hard to believe Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970 nationwide. It is now observed in 192 countries, and is celebrated by more than a billion people every year – the largest secular event of its kind.

The point of Earth Day? This is a day we can change a human behavior in order to make our world a more sustainable place to live. As a parent, this is a great time to make a change in your everyday life – recycle more, bring your reusable bag to the grocery store, use a reusable coffee cup. Be a role model for your child in helping care for our planet.

Earth Day is officially April 22, however, if you’re looking for some additional ways to honor this day over the next week, below are some events in Orange County that are bound to make you think green…

Celebrate Earth Day at the beautiful Rogers Gardens. Each guest will receive a free USDA certified organic herb or vegetable.

Bags, gloves, tools and water will be provided. Wear closed- toed shoes and climate-appropriate clothes and sunblock. All participants must sign a waiver; anyone under the age of 18 must have the waiver signed by a parent/guardian. Contact Orange County Public Works for more information.

Newport Bay Conservancy in partnership with OC Parks hosts the 24th Annual Earth Day at the Bay featuring environmental discovery exhibits, live entertainment, kids crafts, face painting, puppet show and scavenger hunt, free e-waste recycling courtesy of All Green Recycling and short films shown in conjunction with the Newport Beach Film Festival. Food from the Burnt Truck, Tamarindo, Front Porch Pops and souvenir shirts available for purchase.

The Ocean Institute in Dana Point will join in the Orange County observances of Earth Day 2014. Activities include exploring marine wildlife; things to do with kids include creating an eco-friendly craft and enjoy other hands-on activities that teach about protecting natural environments. Clean-up hours are 9:00-11:00 a.m. Check-in at the front of the Ocean Institute; supplies will be provided. Registration is not required, however for groups of 10+ please call in advance. Admission price is $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children; Children age two are free. Members are free.

Learn what you can do to help our ocean planet at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s 15th annual Earth Day Celebration. Join the Aquarium for a weekend of family fun celebrating Earth Day while learning simple, everyday tips to protect our environment. Visit booths from various Earth-friendly organizations, and participate in hands-on learning demonstrations for people of all ages.

Bolsa Chica State Beach will be hosting a “Celebrate Your Earth” Day. This free family event will include sandcastle building, toasting s’mores, beach crafts, beach sports and educational booths. Barbecue will be served for $5 each. Raffles with prizes from local vendors.

Calling all “greenies”! Today is your day to paint the city green. Pretend City is proud to host its 4th annual Earth Day Celebration. Promote environmental awareness on Earth Day and throughout the year by visiting Pretend City to celebrate our Earth through engaging activities such as:

Smart Art: Recycle City – From cereal box buildings to can cars the possibilities are endless when you recreate with recyclable materials. Stop by the Art Studio to see what your little ones will engineer.
Sensational Story Time: Compost Stew – Who knew rotting vegetables and fruit could be so great for the environment? This story time and activity will help you figure out what you need to create your own compost bin at home.

Science for the Senses: Seed Exploration – Your children will enjoy using their deductive reasoning skills and senses as they explore and match a variety of seeds.

The Celebration runs 10am – 4pm and is included in General Admission (Adults and Children 1 year and above $12.50, Infant to 12 months free).
