Laguna Playhouse: The Wizard of Oz

  The Wizard of Oz is coming to Laguna Beach! Come to the Laguna Playhouse this Spring to take this classic musical journey with Dorothy Gale from Kansas through the Haunted Forest to Emerald City with her friends the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion and of course, Toto too! The Wicked Witch from the West threatens to hurt Dorothy and her Friends as they all try to find their way home in this all new Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre production of the beloved story, directed by Donna Inglima! THE WIZARD OF OZ will be presented live on-stage Friday, March 31, through Sunday, April 9, 2017 for 12 Performances only. Student Matinees are presented on Thursday and Friday April 6 and 7 at 10:00am. Weekend Performances are 7:00 Fridays, 1:00pm and 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays. 22nd Annual LA Times Festival of Books

  It is almost time for the return of the LA Times Festival of Books, the nation’s largest literary festival, April 22-23rd at the University of Southern California. The event will feature more than 500 authors, celebrities, musicians, artists and chefs. On Friday, April 21, the 37th annual Book Prizes will honor reading and educational activist Ruebén Martinez with the Innovator’s Award, novelist Thomas McGuane with the Robert Kirsch Award for lifetime achievement, and 11 outstanding literary works published during the last year.  Authors and celebrities scheduled to appear at the festival include: Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Margaret Atwood, Andrew Aydin, T.C. Boyle, Michael Connelly, Bryan Cranston, Ayesha Curry, Roxane Gay, Dave Grohl, Virginia Grohl, Hannah Hart, Chris Hayes, Tippi Hedren, Marlon James, Clinton Kelly, Rep. John Lewis, Cheech Marin, Danica McKellar, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Joyce Carol Oates, Kelly Oxford, Chuck Palahniuk, Nate Powell, Mary Roach, Luis J. Rodríguez, George Saunders, John Scalzi, Scott Simon, Nancy Silverton, Angie Thomas, Stephen Tobolowsky and Ngugi Wa Thiong’o with more to be announced in the coming weeks. Additional festival highlights: • 10 outdoor stages: Acura Cooking Stage, Hoy Stage, L.A. Sound Stage, L.A. Times Central, L.A. Enjoy a Family-Friendly Wilderness Hike

  Explore the great outdoors during a family friendly wilderness hike on Saturday, April 8th. Discover the beauty of Ferber Ranch where children can create nature-related crafts, learn about the surrounding protected lands, and enjoy a mild hike that’s fit for feet of all sizes. Hosted by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), this interpretive excursion will take place on the 400-acre Ferber Ranch Wilderness Preserve, which contains vital wildlife corridors. OCTA’s acquisition of the property allows this core segment of the Trabuco Canyon area to be permanently protected and ensures the preservation of high quality habitat and mobility for wildlife into the Cleveland National Forest. All ages are welcome to attend with parent or guardian, activities are appropriate for children ages 4 and over. No strollers are permitted on the trail. The short and easy hike is a ½ mile one way.   The Aquarium of the Pacific’s twelfth annual International Children’s Festival is a special festival for kids on the weekend of April 1-2, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Celebrating the amazing talents of children of many cultures, this festival featuresWest African, Mexican, Pacific Islander, Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Persian, and Irish dance performances.
