Family-friendly Adventures in Ojai

While the city of Ojai may cater to an adult clientele, there are still a number of ways for families to connect and enjoy their time together. From food to shopping to local culture, kids and kids-at-heart will find amusement in their getaway.

If you’re in town on a Sunday, explore the weekly Farmer’s Market. Food samples, local crafts and fresh air makes for an easygoing afternoon. The local toy store contains distractions and entertaining ways to pass the time. And stroll down the Arcade (no video games here!) to treat yourself at the ice cream or frozen yogurt shops.

Prefer to be more mobile? Hop on and off the Ojai Trolley Service. Departing from Ojai Avenue and the Arcade and commuting as far as Whispering Oaks, it runs from 5:36 a.m. to 8:56 p.m. during the week, with slightly shorter hours over the weekend. If your kids prefer travel by skateboard, they’re in luck! The neighborhood park also contains a skate park. To go beyond the paved road, jeep and bike rentals are also available.

Specialty goods in Ojai include Pixie tangerines and olive oil. Depending on your mood, making time for either is time well-spent. Over at Friend’s Ranch, you can schedule a tour that includes Pixie picking. When you’re short on time, head straight to their retail area for fresh juices and memorabilia. Instead of wine tasting, head back to the Arcade for some savory olive oil tasting. You may even discover a bottle to take home.

Our favorite places to hang out were a short trek away. We spent some time strolling Libbey Park, which happens to have a fantastic playground. If you wander towards the amphitheater, pause at the entry to hear a tune coming from the entry arch. Tennis courts and bike trails are also around here. Check the Libbey Bowl schedule to see if there are any shows coming up in the amphitheater. For a little more knowledge, be sure to hit Bart’s Books. And indoor/outdoor bookstore, you can spend copious amounts of time browsing titles and taking in the unique vibe.

With a small town feel, we can guarantee one of the best views you’ll have is of the night sky. Take a moment to unplug and admire what nature has to offer with stargazing. Enjoy the silence for once. Remember that spending quality time together as a family doesn’t always require being on-the-go.
