Fort St. George Island (Fort George Cay) Turks and Caicos

Fort St George Island -6

When planning a trip to the Turks and Caicos, a trip to Fort St. George Island (Fort George Cay) is one the top places to visit. Years ago, when traveling to the Turks and Caicos, we booked a ½ day snorkeling tour. When the boat ran into trouble, and we had to go back to switch boats, the tour company offered us an extended tour that included St. George Island.

It was one of the most magical experiences of our trip, and when returning to the Turks and Caicos this past week. The first thing we did upon arrival was attempt to book a 1/2 day charter to the deserted island.

When we learned that the 1/2 day charter did not include a visit to Fort St. George Island, we booked a private charter for the following day.

From the moment that our boat arrived at the island, and our feet sank into the warm, soft snow-white sand, we knew that we were in the most beautiful place in the world. The boat docked on the side of the island that had deeper waters, and the staff walked our family around the bend of the island to a 3-4 mile long sand bar.

While on the sand bar, we could walk out a long distance in the ocean while still being able to touch. This long sand bar is also the best destination in the area for collecting sand dollars.

Together with our children, we floated over the water with our snorkeling gear on searching for one of the world’s most treasured gifts – sand dollars.

When to book
I recommend waiting until after you’ve arrived to book your tour. Families can never expect how tired their children might be or how the weather will be days in advance. Upon arriving at your resort, talk to your concierge to pick the perfect day for you family to take the adventure.

Timing of Tour
The timing of your tour is the most important part. The ocean is calm in the morning, and the swells can be rough and sometimes dangerous in the afternoon. 75% of the time, afternoon charters are cancelled due to inclement weather. Although your family might be looking forward to sleeping in during your trip, plan an early morning when booking this trip.

Private vs. Group
Your family can see St. George’s Island in the full-day group tour; however, that is a long day on the water with your children. When traveling with children under the age of 15, I recommend doing a private charter so they can customize a trip for your family to get the most out of your experience in just 4 hours.

Cost
Since we are returning customers, we got a 10% discount and some complimentary lobster for lunch, and it cost $900 for the four-hour private tour.

  1. We just returned from Turks and also had the magical moment of landing at Fort George Cay and seeing literally the most gorgeous spot we’ve ever seen. I can’t imagine that there is anything more beautiful in the world. The Half day private excursion was the best money ever spent.
