Funky and Fun Slab City

slab24

Slab City is a funky place that I could not believe existed until seeing it with my own eyes for the first time when visiting the Salton Sea. I had seen lots of unique pictures of the interactive art exhibit (community) and I couldn’t wait to explore it with my kids.

Once we were done exploring Salvation Mountain we continued down the road about 100 yards to Slab City. It is a large community where artists live freely and create life-size art sculptures. At first we were a little intimidated to get out of the car and explore because we were not 100% sure if people were living in all of the mobile homes around the art sculptures. Then we noticed a sign that said, “welcome” and we began our exploration.

I have to be honest that it was HOT! So hot that my cellphone kept overheating after being out of the car for about 10 minutes. We had to take short breaks in the desert sun exploring the different art sculptures with the kids. Unfortunately, due to the heat, we could not continue to the sculpture garden in East Jesus.

If your family plans a visit to Salvation Mountain, it is truly worth it to bring the kids to see all the art sculptures made from trash and recycled items in Slab City. To get there – just continue along the road past Salvation Mountain and when you see a pickup truck covered in jewels – you know that you’ve arrived.

Enjoy these fun photos we captured while exploring the fun art community.
