Goathill Junction Railroad

Train Rides at Goathill Junction

Tucked away in the beautiful terrain just behind the Costa Mesa golf course lies one of Orange County’s best kept secrets: Goathill Junction Railroad. These model trains run on 5 miles of track and wind through the scenic park. The trains are small and represent 1 1/2″, 2 1/2″ and 3 1/2″ scale equipment. The seats are carpeted and you simply straddle the train like you’re sitting on a horse. There are no seat belts, so hold on to your child although the trains do not go very fast.

Not only are these mini trains fun to ride on but they are FREE! They are are operated by Orange County Model Engineers Inc. so although they are free, donations are welcome and they help keep the trains running. Public rides are conducted on the third Saturday and following Sunday of each month from 10 am until 3:30 pm.

Train rides are 12 minutes long and cover various terrain including bridges, with views of the golf course next door. There is absolutely no picture taking allowed while on the train, not even with your cell phone. They have a conductor who sits facing forward and they WILL stop the train and get off, and walk over to you and scold you if they catch you taking photos. We actually witnessed this.

If you don’t want to wait in line or if you have guests that don’t want to ride, they have several benches throughout the park where you can sit and watch the trains!

Birthday Parties can also be reserved here. These are popular events at Goat Hill Junction Railroad. They are offered on Saturday mornings from 10am-12pm and afternoons from 1pm-3pm. Reservations are required and parties should be booked well in advance due to the popularity of this event.

Goathill Junction even has a small steam engine they operate!

The scenery here is really pretty and after you ride the train you can walk along some of the dirt paths and wave to all the trains that go by. Also, there is another park just across the street called Fairview Park. Sometimes people fly model airplanes there.

Parking is free but be careful, as the roads are not paved and are topped with rocks.  Lines can get very long at times (up to 20 minutes) so I recommend that you arrive early.

They also have a gift shop where you can purchase train related items for your little ones!  For more information visit http://www.ocmetrains.org/6.html or  Like them on Facebook

P.S. During Christmas time they have an event where you can get your photo taken with Santa!
