Marvel has done something they’ve never done before creating an epic space adventure, “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series was first introduced in 1969 with a team of 31st century heroes. By creating the film, the filmmakers were able to explore a whole new side of the Marvel Universe.

When asked what it was like to bring these Marvel comic book characters to life, the director, James Gunn, said “It was liberating. It gave me a chance to take what I loved about Marvel movies and Marvel comics and create a whole new universe, which has been the most exciting thing in my professional career.”

The film is not like any Marvel film I have seen before, and the characters all expose their vulnerabilities, which is a good thing for kids in today’s generation to see. “We live in a world where everybody’s supposed to be cool and act tough and put up fronts. Everybody is so cynical, and there’s a cool contest on the internet of who can be the coolest. This movie is about allowing yourself to care; allowing yourself to give a sh**,” said Gunn.

The actors that were cast for the film were perfect for the roles in which they played, and quite possibly one of the best casts a Marvel film has ever had. Chris Pratt who plays the lead role of Peter Quill who is abducted from Earth after the passing of his mother, gave an epic performance. Chris Pratt is most well-known for his role in “Parks and Recreation,” and his casting for this role was one that many people didn’t expect. “People wouldn’t have seen me in this role, but that’s because they weren’t able to have the vision that James had for what this could be,” said Pratt.

“I’m not sure I ever saw myself in this kind of role, but thats what is really nice about this movie. I think it is unlike anything that’s ever been done before, and I think anyone who sees the movie would agree.” Chris Pratt

When casting the film, “We had screen tests of at least 20 people looking for the right person. I really wanted somebody who could embody the character and take it beyond what was on the page in the same way that Robert Downey, Jr. did for ‘Iron Man,'” said Gunn. The casting director, Sarah Finn, is who Gunn credits for casting of Pratt for the lead role. “She kept putting his picture in front of me and saying, ‘you know, what about this guy?’,” said Gunn. Gunn didn’t want to do a screen test with Pratt, but Finn brought him in, “and I was mad,” said Gunn.

“Chris came in and he started to read. This a hundred percent true that within 20 seconds I was like, holy sh**, that’s the guy.” James Gunn
