Hilton San Diego Downtown/Bayside Weekend Getaway
We stayed as a guest of the venue
Staycations are my favorite kind of family vacations. It just takes a couple of minutes to toss a couple of outfits into a bag and be poolside at a hotel relaxing within minutes. Because staycations are always far less stressful than major vacations, our family tends to take staycations a lot throughout the year. It is a perfect way to stop, relax, and recharge as a family without a big cost or stress. We found ourselves overly stressed about the start of the school year, so we took our kids to San Diego for the weekend to stay at the new Hilton San Diego Downtown/Bayside and relieve some of their back-to-school anxiety.
The new hotel is centrally located within walking distance of some of the best family attractions in downtown San Diego. Just a couple of blocks away is Little Italy, the beach, The USS Midway, and Seaport Village. Plus, one of the hottest new San Diego restaurants, Pacific Standard Coastal Kitchen, is right next door to the hotel.
We were originally planning on taking the train down for the weekend, but since we had a late start, we ended up driving down for the weekend. Because we got stuck in Friday afternoon traffic, we didn’t arrive until the early evening. We checked into the hotel, and the staff at the front desk helped direct us to a delicious place for dinner just a couple of blocks away in Little Italy. Our family sat on the outdoor patio of the restaurant talking about the new school year, and all of our favorite summer memories.
When we returned to the hotel, we were overwhelmed by the size of the room. Our family suite featured a large family room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. It was the perfect home away from home for the weekend with everything our family could possibly need to feel comfortable. The minute that our kids climbed into the cozy beds, they drifted off to sleep while dreaming of the exciting things we had planned to do as a family the following day.
I woke-up in the morning to the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen and the laughter of my children watching their favorite Saturday morning cartoons. Once everyone was ready to start the day, we walked to have brunch at the popular Crack Shack. There is nothing better than starting a day with fried chicken and eggs – our kids were in heaven.
After brunch, we basked in the beautiful ocean views along the boardwalk and then rented a surrey to explore the area. Our kids were squealing with delight as we rode the 4-person bike along the boardwalk while trying to avoid crashing into walls or people. It was a blast. While on the bike, we were able to get great views of the USS Midway, take a selfie with The Unconditional Surrender statue, stop to do some yoga on the grass, and get a henna tattoo. No bike ride in San Diego is complete without an ice cream too.
After our bike ride, the kids were hot and ready for a cool down. Just steps away from the hotel is the popular Waterfront Park, where our kids got to splash around in the giant water features. There were hundreds of kids playing together in the water feature and climbing the massive play structure. After cooling down in the water, and playing on the play structure, we walked around the park to admire some of the beautiful pieces of garden art.
Then it was time for fun at the pool. We ended our day with the kids swimming in the rooftop pool at the Hilton San Diego Downtown/Bayside. I relaxed on a lounge chair while watching my children giggle, splash and laugh for the remainder of the afternoon.
We ended our day in San Diego with a cocktail on the outdoor patio before having an unforgettable dining experience at Pacific Standard Coastal Kitchen. Our children were able to have healthy food options, while my taste buds were tantalized with delicious seafood. It was the perfect ending to the perfect day in San Diego.
Before leaving to return home the next morning, we enjoyed the hotel’s complimentary breakfast. The Hilton San Diego Downtown/Bayside does not have your traditional complimentary hotel breakfast and offers a wide variety of choices from homemade waffles to eggs and bacon. There was something for everyone to enjoy, and our children left with their tummies full of delicious goodness.
