The Hollywood Bowl Kicks Off its 2014 Summer Season

We attended as a guest of the Hollywood Bowl

Few experiences can compare to attending a concert at The Hollywood Bowl. Even fewer can compare to actually standing on the stage and seeing the theater from the perspective of its performers… the very stage where the LA Philharmonic performs each season. Where The Beatles, Pavarotti, Yo-Yo Ma, and so many other of the world’s most talented musicians have performed.

Nestled amongst the trees in the hills of Hollywood, this outdoor theater, is one of my favorite venues, so I was thrilled to be able to attend the launch of its 2014 Summer Season last Tuesday evening with my sister, Shan… on the stage!

The stage was stunning and provided the perfect surroundings for arts patrons and media to gather as LA Philharmonic’s CEO, Deborah Borda and Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel shared the podium to make several announcements about the upcoming Summer season…

Welcome to the Hall of Fame!: 80’s rock band, The Go-Go’s along with Portland band, Pink Martini will be inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame Saturday evening, June 21st along with already announced, Emmy and Tony Award winning, Kristin Chenoweth, who will be inducted by actress, comedian, singer, and writer Carol Burnett.

An Evening of Chinese Splendor: In his first LA public performance, singer Leehom Wang will join singer Zuying Song and pianist Rueibin Chen, along with the LA Phil, Saturday evening, July 5th.

The 90’s are Calling: Fresh from Coachella, Portland’s 90’s indie band, Neutral Milk Hotel, is touring for the first time since 1998 and will make only one LA appearance this year, headlining on Thursday evening, September 18th.

All That Jazz: The LA Philharmonic Association will present the 36th Playboy Jazz Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 14th and 15th. This festival will include some of jazz’s most acclaimed artists. And while we’re on the topic of jazz, four time Grammy Award winner and legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock, will continue in his role as Creative Chair for Jazz through the 2015/2016 Season.

A Night at the Opera: Gustavo Dudamel will conduct a one night, double bill of Italian opera Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci on Sunday evening, July 27th, which will benefit the LA Phil Musicians Pension Fund.

Bravo: Gustavo Dudamel’s contract as Music Director of the LA Phil has officially been extended through the 2018/2019 season. This means Dudamel, who is also Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, will celebrate LA Phil’s 100th anniversary.

Sprucing things up: The amphitheater will replace all outdoor lighting and install additional lighting in the surrounding trees and along entrance pathways that will add to the magical atmosphere when the sun goes down. Plus all benches are being replaced with the same Alaskan Yellow Cedar used when they were last replaced in 1981.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of experiencing The Hollywood Bowl is being able to dine on the grounds, pre-concert. You may bring your own picnic, but you’ll be envying those around you who are savoring one of The Patina Restaurant Group’s many dining options.

The Wine Bar

The Wine Bar offers a relaxed atmosphere with a variety of craft beer, curated wine, shoju cocktails, and unique small bites and large plates.
Enjoy dishes such as Crispy Chicken Wings with Togarashi Spice and Ponzu Dipping Sauce; and Pork Belly with Summer. Succotash with Lima Beans, Corn, Tomato,
and Piquillo Pepper Vinaigrette.

Get your food to go and head to your seats with selections such as The “Pool” Burger featuring a one pound Angus burger stuffed with Braised Short Rib, Candied Bacon, Gruyere Cheese, Baby Arugula and Black-Truffle Aioli; Thai Chicken Sausage with Pickled Green Papaya, Jalapeno, Cilantro; and The Veggie Hollywood “Bowl” with Lemon Scented Quinoa, Roasted Baby Carrots, Grilled Asparagus and Cherry Tomatoes.

Market Café West, Nishi Sushi Bar

Fresh sushi and Japanese delicacies are prepared daily from this onsite sushi bar with offerings such as Spicy Tuna Roll with Wasabi and Gari; 5 pieces of Assorted Sashimi with Tsuma and Shiso Leaf; Broiled Miso Black Cod with Japanese Rice and Sesame Seed; Summer Strawberries and Lychee; Ni Juako Box with Seaweed Salad and assortment of Japanese side dishes; and Sushi Platter for Two with California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Shrimp Ebi Nigiri, Salmon Nigiri, Albacore, Edamame, Soy Sauce, Wasabi, and Gari.

The Rooftop Grill,

Dine al fresco overlooking the venue on mesquite grilled steaks including Rib-Eye, Filet Mignon, and Flat Iron Steak; or the Crab Stack with Lump Crab, Cucumbers, Pea Shoots, Tomato, Avocado Mango,
and Ginger-Lime Dressing
Seasonal Sides.

Box Seat Dining

You can pre-order from a wide selection of chef menus and a la carte offerings such as Hawaiian Ahi Tuna Steak with Udon Noodle Salad, Charred Green Onion, and Soy-Ginger Vinaigrette; Penne Pasta Puttanesca with Summer Squash; Blistered Cherry Tomaotes, Pecorino Romano Cheese, and Crispy Basil; Dining for Two “Smokey Joes” BBQ Rib Plate served with Slow Cooked Baby Back Robs, Housemade BBQ Sauce, and Whole Roasted Corn on the Cob.

Picnic Baskets

Pre-order a Picnic Basket to bring to your bench or have delivered to your box seat. You might try the Verano Basket which contains Lemon Poached Atlantic Salmon Filets with Summer Vegetables and Lemon Aioli; Country Style Potato Salad; Simply Sliced Summer Tomatoes with Balsamic Vinaigrette; and for dessert Chocolate “Moon Pie” with Caramel Dipping Sauce.

To showcase their delicious offerings, The Patina Group punctuated the evening with cocktails, wine, and tables of beautifully presented dishes for everyone to sample.

And sample we did. From the craft cocktails like Pepper Tree Lane, a refreshing mix of shoju, cucumber, mint and lime juice and the Sparkling Spectacular made with strawberries, house-made elderflower cordial, fresh lemon juice, shoju, and sparkling wine.
