Kaiser Permanente Farmer’s Market
Kaiser Permanente has a strong focus on family wellness. Just one of the benefits of being a Kaiser Permanente member is being able to take advantage of seeing your physician and bringing home fresh produce from their onsite farmer’s market. Once a week, Kaiser Permanente invites local farmers to come to their facility to offer locally grown produce for their customers.
Recently, I had the honor of visiting Kaiser Permanente in Irvine to explore their farmer’s market. While I was there, I was able to purchase an abundance of fresh produce for my family, get locally made honey and order an acai bowl for my lunch. The staff working at the different booths were friendly and proud to share their healthy and locally made items with everyone who was visiting the farmer’s market.
Once I was done exploring the Kaiser Permanente farmer’s market, I sat down to talk with two clinical dietitians at Kaiser Permanente, Jigna Mehta, and Marianna Gabriel. Ever since my oldest son has started culinary school this year, he has become more passionate than ever about transitioning to a plant-based diet, and I was able to get some great tips and recommendations from the dietitians.
There are many health benefits from transitioning your family to a plant-based diet. “Animals are being treated with enzymes, and they do not have the best living conditions that can affect their emotions which can transfer into the meat. If that is a theory you believe, then you are going to want to have a plant-based diet,” said Jigna Mehta. She continued to tell me that I am not alone. They have many teenagers, like my son, who are coming to see them get help transitioning to a plant-based diet. That they want to be cruelty-free completely, with a diet that doesn’t harm animals.
Wondering how to switch your family to a plant-based diet? The goal is to have a good combination of fruits and vegetables in your children’s diet. According to the Kaiser Permanente dietitians, at least five servings a day, but don’t dominate it with fruits.
Dr. Gabriel said, “I have two boys, and I found it helpful to involve them in the cooking process. Involving them in cooking, talking about it, and making their lunches together helps.”
The dietitians at Kaiser Permanente are available for their patients to help through the process of eating healthier. They will provide multiple consultations, recipes, and tips on how your family can eat better, and live longer. Learn more about Kaiser Permanente online.
