Life, Love and Happiness in An American in Paris

We visited as a guest of the venue

How lovely is it that a musical can stop time and capture two of the most basic feelings of life; love and happiness! If you are like us and enjoy the theater, then we have a fantastic recommendation for you! We were invited to attend the recent opening night of “An American in Paris,”at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The movie we all know so well from the 1950’s inspired the creation of the musical for the stage, and it is truly breathtaking and beautiful.

The story is set on a young American soldier and a sweet, beautiful French girl in the city of Paris, 1945 at the end of the Second World War. The two main characters are looking for new beginnings at the end of such a tragic war. The story which does recognize the war, but instead shifts it’s focus to a celebration of life; full of singing and dancing. Delivering the simple yet powerful reminder even in today’s world, to cherish life and all the goodness that still exists.

It’s challenging for this writer to capture the flawless beauty of the production and give it justice in sharing it with all of you. From the moment the actors take the stage, and you hear the catchy, familiar tunes of George Gershwin you are immediately pulled into the story, having forgotten about the outside world. Admittedly, there were moments during several scenes that we were going to clap in the middle; we felt as though we were in the story, on the stage with a lovely circle of friends. We then remember, “Oh wait, we’re watching this musical.”

The actors are stellar! They are classically trained ballet dancers who crossover to share with us their love of dance in a Broadway musical, and it’s magic! Gliding across the stage; singing, dancing in the midst of set changes. In the first scene alone the set changes numerous times; sharing with us all of the places in Paris we would visit this evening. The ease and energy the actor’s display is amazing; full of perfection! The writing delivers comedic jokes throughout so be prepared to laugh too.

The musical is such a celebration of life that emits out to the audience. On opening night, we laughed together; applauding in places that brought pure joy to all of us. We wanted to dance, sing and wear the fabulous costumes; we wanted to be in Paris!

If you want to toe tap from your seat, smile and feel happy, then go see this fabulous musical, “An American in Paris”!
