Master of the Mystic Arts: Doctor Strange

We saw a screening as a guest of Disney

A screening of Doctor Strange

My 11-year-old is a huge Marvel fan. He’s got the comics; he’s got the encyclopedia (yes there is a Marvel Encyclopedia that has in-depth information about all things Marvel), and he seems to know about all things that are happening in the Marvel Universe including when movies are slated to come out.

Doctor Strange

I grew up on X-Men but didn’t really follow the other superheroes until my son.  I love Marvel movies because they bring pop culture and humor into dark situations leading the viewer to feel all sorts of emotions from fear to happiness anger to dismay.

Magical and Mystical Doctor Strange

I never leave a Marvel moving feel depressed, well that not true, I’m depressed the movie is over and that I have to wait a year or so for the next one.  So, whenever I see a preview of an upcoming Marvel film, I get jazzed to go. I’m not one to pull the wool over people’s eyes, so the truth is I had no desire to see Doctor Strange but my son did.  My husband was set to take him when the movie came out and then we were invited to preview the film two weeks before its November 4th opening.

The world of Doctor Strange

I do everything for my kids, so I decided to bite the bullet and take my son to see a film I had no desire to, worst case scenario, I would have a 2-hour nap.  My son, on the other hand, couldn’t contain his excitement.

It was as if he had been waiting his entire life for this moment.  Before going to see the film, I wanted to know more about Doctor Strange, so I went to my son to get the 411.

Doctor Strange gaining his powers

First of all, Dr. Strange is a genius and to quote my son, “Uh no he’s not a superhero mom he’s a Master of the Mystic Arts.”  Uh huh, that completely answered my question.  Looking dumbfounded my son felt the need to educate me more and let me know that Dr. Strange is a Supreme Sorcerer who taps into the world’s energy to guard and protect the world from evil mystical energy.  Well, of course, that makes complete sense right?  I have to say that after watching the movie he was spot on, and once you see it you will completely understand as well.  While I was sitting in the theater, the lights began to dim, and the famous Marvel logo did its flipbook effect.

Doctor Strange

The movie starts off with the ridiculously talented Benedict Cumberbatch performing surgery.  In my mind, I’m thinking surgeon by day Supreme Sorcerer at night?  That gets answered quickly.  I’m not one to ruin a movie for those who don’t know the backstory, but believe me you will see how he goes from a surgeon to Sorcerer to Supreme Sorcerer and leave the movie with little to no questions.

Doctor Strange in theaters on November 4th

As the story unfolds, I find myself more and more impressed with the realness of the storyline and concept.  The love/hate relationship for the ego driven Stephen Strange, the evolution of a man trying to find his place in the world, the blurred lines of right and wrong, it was all there in this film as well as some of the most breathtaking visual effects I have ever seen.

Marvel's Doctor Strange

The movie captured my imagination and my love of a mysterious group of monk-like warriors protecting our spiritual world so that our physical world could flow.  The characters would travel between unseen dimensions in our current world fighting demons that try to breaking the passage between realms.

The Magic of Doctor Strange

This movie is so well done, and the cast of talented actors are so vast that you cannot believe this movie is an action movie.  From Mads Mikkelsen who is brilliant as a villain and my favorite actress Rachel McAdams who in my opinion is always perfect to Benedict Cumberbatch (yeah that’s right Sherlock) and the Tilda Swinton who seriously is believable in every role she plays.

You sit there and think these actors aren’t just randoms, most are classically trained, and the rest are award winners, how is it possible they signed on for an action film, and then you watch the movie and think oh now I get it.

Naz Nodjoumi and Dara watching Doctor Strange

As a person who didn’t want to see it, I totally advise going and seeing it in 3D.  The visual effects are out of this world.  I felt as if I was pulled into the Dr. Strange dimension fighting also side Strange and the other Sorcerers, trying to save the world.

Dr. Strange’ s mystifying journey opens in theaters today, November 4, 2016, be sure to check it out and have your perception of reality altered.
