Children’s eyes are sure to light up when beautiful ballerinas dance and twirl to Tchaikovsky’s charming and imaginative music for Pacific Symphony’s annual “Nutcracker for Kids,” led by the Symphony’s new Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia and featuring the Festival Ballet Theatre (FBT). The most popular concert of the Symphony’s Family Musical Mornings series, this holiday concert brings to life the enchanted world of toy soldiers, waltzing flowers and the Sugar Plum Fairy in a 50-minute version adapted especially for children ages 5 and above. Stephanie Draude (“A Sherlock Holmes Halloween” and “Superheroes”) joins in as elf Clementine Sparkletoes to help narrate the story told through music and dance. And to top off this festive holiday tradition―Santa Claus makes a special appearance to lead the audience in a merry sing-along!

Saturday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Musical Carnival at 9 a.m. (for the 10 a.m. show) and 12:15 p.m. (for the 11:30 a.m. show).

The Nutcracker

This holiday season, ballet audiences will once again be transported to the enchanting Palace of Sweets as the Maple Youth Ballet returns with its original rendition of The Nutcracker.

Performances will take place:
Saturday December 19, 2pm and 7 pm;
Sunday December 20, 3 pm;
Monday December 21, 6:30 pm.

After the Sunday performance, children are welcome to get up on stage and be part of a magical Nutcracker workshop.

Bursting with energy and excitement, Festival Ballet’s The Nutcracker is an enormously popular holiday tradition at the Barclay Theatre for audiences of all ages. Set to the cherished Tchaikovsky score, the ballet tells the timeless coming-of-age story of Clara, a young girl who receives a wooden nutcracker as a Christmas gift, setting off a magical midnight journey through the heat of battle, the cool beauty of a snowy wonderland and the delightfully sweet kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. This full-length, traditional production is choreographed and directed by Festival Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Director Salwa Rizkalla, and features a cast of professional dancers and more than 100 Southern California children. There will also be special guest performers to be announced later.

The Nutcracker: Holiday Classic From Coast City Ballet

Choreographed and directed by Clara D’Autilia, this glittering tale follows young Clara, who receives the gift of a nutcracker at a festive family Christmas party. That night she dreams of a grand adventure that begins with a handsome prince, continues with an epic battle between mice and toys, and comes to a climax with a magical journey to the Land of Sweets where Clara meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and dancers from foreign lands. For those wanting to introduce their youngest family members to this holiday favorite, the preview production is a slightly abridged version that still features all of the highlights.

You’ll marvel at the magical adventures of Clara, a young girl whose Christmas Eve gift of a nutcracker comes alive, leading her on an exciting journey that begins with an epic battle between mice and toys and ends with a journey to the Kingdom of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. Celebrating its 27th season, the company continues its tradition of donating all performance proceeds to local charities.
