Rockin’ Family Memories at the OC Fair with the Fresh Beat Band

We attended as a guest of the fair

The OC Fair is a 23-day annual fair held every summer at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.  For many families it has become an annual tradition to eat, play, ride and rock out.

The fairgrounds’ 150 acres has been the home to the fair ever since 1949 and yields more than a million visitors each year.  Back in 2009, then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recommended the Orange County Fairgrounds be listed for sale.  A public auction was held, but before any sales agreements could be signed, two lawsuits were filed and the sale was stopped.

The Preservation Society and Tel Phil Enterprises filed in the Court of Appeal and asked that the new governor Jerry Brown have the sale categorically dismissed which it was; thank goodness because where else can you go and enjoy a fried fill in the blank.

This past weekend I took my family to the fair for the first time.  I went when I was a teen but my husband and children had never been.

11

Boy had the fair changed from when I was a teen.  First of all I’m pretty sure it grew a million times bigger.  They had sections of the carnival dedicated to the kiddies and then to the adults.  On top of that they had an action sport arena and two venues that play music; The Pacific Amphitheatre and The Hangar.

Wait there’s more…exhibits, shopping, food, farm, the list can go on and on.  In order to really experience all that the fair has to offer you need to visit at least twice.

1

The fair has great deals to help cut costs.  On Wednesdays and Thursdays the OC Fair offers $30 Unlimited Carnival Ride Wristbands as well as deals on getting in for free.   All you have to do is visit their website and see their calendar for deals.  How easy is that?

Now you might wonder what a good age is to take your kids to the fair.  In my opinion any age.   If your kids are too young to ride the rides then you can take them to Centennial farms.

21

If your kids are older and too cool to hang at the farm then you have the rides.  If your kids hate everything then go for the food. If you are on a tight budget then go to the free exhibits and people watch.

You really can’t go wrong.  Our primary visit to the fair was to see Nickelodeon’s The Fresh Beat Band play at the Pacific Amphitheatre.

18

It was so fitting that my children’s first concert was at the Pacific Amphitheatre.

19

My first concert was there back in 1991 and it meant a lot to me to have that venue be theirs as well.  If you have a child aged 5-9 then you know who The Fresh Beat Band are and screamed a little for missing their show.

5

For those of you who missed that cut off, The Fresh Beats are Shout, Twist, Marina, and Kiki; four best friends in a band who go to music school,  graduate together as musicians and are determined to follow their dreams.   Each episode began with a song that foreshadows a problem that the band would solve. The band then works together to solve the problem and when the problem is solved they perform a song with the problem and solution incorporated into the lyrics.

Before the show my daughter bumped into one of her friends and once the show began they met up, danced and sang along to the band together.  The show was a hit and the kids had a blast.

The OC Fair runs July 11 through August 10.  If you don’t have time to visit the fair this year, don’t worry they will be back next year.  Be sure to check out their calendar of events ahead of time to book your seat to one of their amazing shows.

I’m an OC mom of two and photographer. I love living in Southern California and want to expose my children to all that it offers. I love taking my kids on adventures and capturing their every moment so much so that my kids find it odd if I don’t take their pictures. You can see my work on facebook.com/photosbynaz.
