Sharing a Love for Theatre with Your Children

We attended as a guest of the Segerstrom

My “not so little” girl

My wife and I make an effort to spend quality alone time with our children individually. Spending quality time alone with each of our children has strengthened our relationships and has helped to build stronger bonds with our children. Just as important as it is for me to spend quality alone time with my wife, it is also important that I do the same with my sons and daughter. My daughter, Ella, and I have our favorite place to go for a father/daughter date night, and that is at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

As a young boy, my Mother would take me to the theatre on a regular basis. It is through her that I developed a love for the arts that I am now passing down to my daughter. When I attended the season preview at the Segerstrom Center, I knew that my daughter would love going to see The Wizard of Oz.

When the night came to take her to the Wizard of Oz, my wife brought our daughter to my office. As my daughter walked into my office, I flashed back to when she was just a toddler going with me to the theatre, and now she is becoming a beautiful young woman. It was at that moment that I realized how limited these times are with her, and that before I know it, she will be going to the theatre with her own children.

After having dinner at our favorite sandwich shop in the mall, we walked over to Segerstrom Hall for the performance. My daughter enjoyed all of the pre-show activities along with the offered sweet treats. The Segerstrom Center for the Arts is doing incredible things to get children excited about coming to the theatre. Over the years of taking my daughter to performances at the Segerstrom Center, I continue to see more and more children coming with their parents.

When the curtain rose, and the performance began, we were swept into the world of Oz. The costumes, lighting, and acting were phenomenal. Our favorite part of the performance was the music. The music evoked emotion throughout the performance showing, my daughter and I, the beloved classic story in a whole new way.

When I called my mom today to tell her about how wonderful the performance was, I was surprised to hear that she went with her girlfriends last night too. We spent the evening talking together on the phone about our memories going to the theatre together, and how magical the performance was last night.  In my heart,  I have a feeling that my mom saw us last night, and enjoyed watching me and my daughter bond in the same way that we did together.

Recommendations:
If you have younger children (under the age of 7) I would recommend bringing them to an afternoon performance. Children will get more out of the experience when attending a show that does not begin close to their bedtime. The show is 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Dates and Tickets:
The Wizard of Oz will be at The Segerstrom Center for the Arts until February 23rd with tickets starting at $25. Tickets can be purchased online at scfta.org, by phone at 714-556-2787 or at the box office. The Segerstrom Center is located at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa.
