Spark LA’s – Spark A Dream Gala

spark1

We were thrilled to recently attend and participate in an evening of raising awareness for middle school students in the Los Angeles area at the Spark LA’s – Spark A Dream Gala. A night celebrating students who have participated or currently are being mentored through workplace based apprenticeships. The program combines project based learning, skill building and exploring career paths; a very special journey of opportunity and growth to keep the students on track to graduate on time and lead them into their future.

It’s very inspiring to be surrounded by the individuals and companies that participate in this program; but most inspiring are the students themselves. An evening full of big smiles, philanthropy and those first hand stories that give you chills.

The event host of the evening was Judy Reyes, you may be familiar with her from her work on Scrubs and Devious Maids. She graciously shared her own experience of growing up in the Bronx with us and the mentor that inspired her when she was a teenager at the age of 14. Unknown to Judy Reyes was a special guest in the audience this evening, the very mentor that inspired her as a young girl back in the Bronx! Of course, you can imagine the emotions; tears, happiness and such surprise; it shows what an impact even all these years later this mentor played in her own life.

Next came heartwarming speeches, the recognition of Clinton Middle School Principal, Brenda Pensamiento for her admirable contributions to the program and her passion to help.

As we were surrounded by twinkling lights under the warm evening sky the bidding for fundraising began with several companies matching. The enthusiasm increased as we witnessed the growth of funds for such a lovely program. We mingled amongst the humble yet notable guests, such as Jordan Belfi of Entourage; Max Landis the American Ultra Director, and so many others but our favorite guests were the Spark Students.

In a world where we all witness challenge regularly, it’s wonderful to be aware of this program, Spark LA, as it supports our youth and continues to give them the tools and knowledge to accomplish great things. Sharing this from one generation to another is the biggest gift and collectively through parents, teachers, mentors and corporations we will be witness to some amazing future leaders!
