The Wizard of Oz at The Laguna Beach Playhouse

We visited as a guest of the venue

On Saturday my daughter and I had an afternoon theater date at the Laguna Beach Playhouse.  The show was Wizard of Oz and was brought to life by a marvelous group of actors. The play is based on the famous movie and follows Dorothy’s travels through the Land of Oz.

If you have never seen a play at the Laguna Beach Playhouse, you must attend a show at least once.  The location is cozy and every seat has a great view of the stage.  Before the show the courtyard has some activities, with the lobby inside serving drinks and snacks.  The shows tend to offer meet and greet with the cast after the show.

For our show the lobby offered raffle prize of a beach bike (super cool yellow beach cruiser and a toy dog an obvious reference to Toto), some books, and art work related to Wizard of Oz.  The courtyard offered kids actives such as face painting and arts and crafts so that the kids could get into the mood of the show prior to the play.

The play itself was filled with wonderful songs from the movie (performed superbly by the actors).  There were some off the show remarks that were enjoyed by the audience.  For example, the cowardly lion first noticed his lack of courage when his father picked him up while standing on a cliff, and showed him to the animals of the savannah and sang a song (referencing Lion King).  Kids and adults both enjoyed that reference.

After the show we had a chance to take photos and get autographs of the actors from the show.

For us the afternoon was very well spent watching a classic show performed superbly at the intimate Laguna Playhouse and to top it all off we were able to interaction with the actors.

Unfortunately this weekend was the last for The Wizard of Oz but the playhouse as wonderful shows year round.  The Laguna Playhouse is located at 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.  For more information about upcoming shows or to buy tickets check out their webpage www.lagunaplayhouse.com.
