Viceroy Zihuatanejo ‘Day of the Dead’ Celebration

Viceroy Zihuatanejo will come alive October 31 through November 2, 2016 with exhibits by acclaimed folk artists, historic displays, performances by noted dance companies, special dining and music to celebrate Mexico’s unique signature holiday, The Day of the Dead.

During El Día de los Muertos, Mexicans remember and honor their passed family members and ancestors. But it is a celebration, not a time of sadness. The Day of the Dead is a colorful and exuberantly festive national holiday with roots that go back millennia. The Spanish tried to eradicate it but it was more powerful than the conquistadors. This chic resort on the Pacific is continuing the tradition by partnering with a local art gallery, GALART, to offer a three-day The Day of the Dead program.

Monday, October 31
6 – 8 pm – Cocktail Reception at La Marea restaurant
– ‘El Mexico de los Mexicanos’ exhibition by critically acclaimed folk
art studio El Santo de Madrazo, based in San Miguel de Allende

honored with a display of personal items, from favorite Tequila
and cigarettes to books and paint brushes

dance company)

Also setting the scene for the holiday at Viceroy Zihuatanejo will be:

A traditional The Day of the Dead altar with photos, skulls and other themed elements.

Homemade ‘Pan Muerto,’ a traditional bread served during the holiday period, included as part of the complimentary morning in-room coffee service.

Mixologists at the bars preparing a variety of “bloody” cocktails.

On The Day of the Dead, celebrated annually on November 1 in Mexico, loved ones are said to come back to visit their family and they are welcomed and honored in numerous ways – from creating altars for them adorned with candles and photos, eating sugar skulls inscribed with the names of the family members and making colorful works of art, to decorating gravesites with flowers and candles and picnicking at the cemetery on the loved ones’ favorite foods.
