Viceroy Zihuatanejo Romantic Weekend Getaway
We stayed as a guest of the resort
When was the last time that you had a weekend getaway with your husband? For my husband and me, we couldn’t remember the last time that we got away without the kids, so we realized that it has just been way too long.
My husband was gearing up to have a major corneal transplant done, and I thought that taking him to a magical place in Mexico would get his mind off the surgery, and he would come home relaxed and free of any stresses before having his transplant. There were so many fantastic choices of where to have our getaway in Mexico, and it was the Viceroy in Zihuatanejo that caught my eye.
I had always wanted to visit Zihuatanejo, and the resort looked like the perfect romantic destination for us to relax, reconnect, and be romantic together. I called the grandparents to arrange for childcare and booked our weekend getaway.
Cross Border Xpress
Airfare was affordable by flying out of the Tijuana airport and using the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) to get to the airport. We booked a red eye flight into Zihuatanejo so that we could arrive early enough to have most of our first day in the area to relax. The moment that the plane took off, we felt all of the stresses of daily life drift away.
Once we landed, it was a quick ride in a cab to the Viceroy Zihuatanejo. Upon arriving, the staff greeted us with cold towels, and then took us on a tour of the property. We sipped on a glass of freshly made juice while basking in the beautiful views surrounding the property.
Then we were handed the key to our beautiful villa for the weekend. The room was gorgeous, featuring marble floors, a sprawling living room, and a bathroom fit for royalty. On the patio, there was a private plunging pool, patio chairs, and views of the lush grounds.
After relaxing in our room, we took a cab into town for lunch at La Casa Vieja and did a little exploring of the city. Our day ended with a sunset dinner on an outdoor patio overlooking the beautiful ocean at il Mare that is just down the street from the Viceroy Zihuatanejo.
In the morning, fresh coffee and pastries were waiting for us at our doorstep. We sipped on the coffee before having breakfast at the resort restaurant, La Villa. We were seeking some adventure for the day, so the concierge at the resort helped us with booking a rental car so we could explore the area around Zihuatanejo. We drove the car to gorgeous beaches, discovered many magic places, and ate at a couple of local restaurants. It was a thrilling day full of adventure, exploring the beautiful country of Mexico.
Our day ended with a romantic candlelight dinner on the sand overlooking the crystalline waters at the resorts highly-acclaimed restaurant, La Marea. We savored freshly caught lobster, sipped on wine, and fell in love with each other all over again. Before retreating to our room for the evening, we had a tequila tasting at the Coral Bar.
In the morning, the staff at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo had a private table set-up for us on the beach to have breakfast. We watched the beautiful sky change colors as the sun finished rising while our taste buds were tantalized by the exquisite flavors of the food.
Following breakfast, the chef of the restaurant greeted us and whisked us into the city to go shopping for a cooking class. The chef helped to show us how to pick out the freshest seafood at the local seafood market, exposed us to the wide variety of fresh seasonal produce that locals have the opportunity to purchase, and pointed out the best places to eat when returning to the city.
After shopping in the city, we sipped on a margarita while relaxing on the beach while the chef prepared everything for our beachfront cooking class. The cooking class was the highlight of our trip. The chef showed us how to make some authentic recipes in the hands-on class. Once the class was complete, we enjoyed our meal at a beautiful table on the beach overlooking the ocean. We spent the rest of the day relaxing on the beach before returning to the city for dinner at Taqueria La Papa Loca followed by dessert and live music at Bandido’s.
Before heading back home, we got up early to walk along Playa La Ropa to the famous Playa Las Gatas. The walk was relaxing, and when we arrived at Playa Las Gatas, we were in paradise. We saw a magical world under the sea as we were snorkeling around the bay and had one of our last cocktails in Zihuatanejo at one of the beachfront cafes.
It was the perfect ending to a perfect romantic getaway at Viceroy Zihuatanejo. When looking for the ideal location for you and your husband to get away and come home with a stronger marriage than ever before, plan a weekend getaway to Viceroy Zihuatanejo.
