Whale Watching with Dana Wharf

We attended as a guest of Dana Wharf

Our family had the opportunity to go on a whale watching adventure with Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching, located out of Dana Point Harbor. With the beautiful sights and knowledgable crew it was a fun and educational experience for our whole family.

Our family of four (almost five) checked in with the Dana Wharf team about a half an hour before our departure time of 10am.  We were given our tickets and lingered around the harbor for a few minutes waiting for our boat to board.  If you haven’t been, Dana Point Harbor is a wonderful place to spend a morning, or evening, or any time, really.  It’s small enough to walk – although if you toured the entire thing, you’d get a decent workout – and has lovely, quaint shops and restaurants.

Once aboard, we found a spot at the helm of the boat, because there was no way my five year old or my husband were going to miss a single bit of the action.

After a while at sea, my two year old and I made our way back to the cabin for a little rest on the benches. In the cabin, they offer beverages and light snacks (cash only), and there are clear plastic wind shields so while you can still see out to the water, you can get a little break from the wind (although, at least in summer, the weather even out on the ocean is usually very pleasant). The friendly crew even brought out models of whales and other sea life to give my youngest a little something extra to look at.

On our trip we viewed Sea Lions and a plethora of dolphins, all from very close range; the dolphins were literally jumping and playing right next to the boat mere yards from our feet.

Unfortunately we did not have any whale sightings on our two hour tour, but, consistent with Dana Warf company policy, if there is not a good showing of whales or dolphins on your trip, they issue a “whale check” to come back, no expiration, no questions asked.    We thought this was an excellent and generous policy, and are already looking forward to our return trip!

Here’re some suggestions on what to bring for your whale watching adventure:

  • jacket or wind breaker
  • water and snacks (available for cash purchase on the boat also)
  • camera
  • sea sick medication, if needed (I get mildly sea sick, and this boat was very tolerable for me without medication, but much of this likely depends on conditions, too)

Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching is conveniently located in Dana Point Harbor adjacent to the Jolly Roger.  They currently have trips departing daily.  Check times and buy tickets online at www.danawharf.com.

I’d highly recommend whale watching with Dana Wharf out of Dana Point Harbor for a fun and unique adventure for the whole family!
