Winter Magic at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

SugarPineRailroad16

It is the most magical time of the year to visit Yosemite National Park. While visiting over Thanksgiving weekend, we were surprised to have arrived the day following a major snowfall. The entire park was covered with a blanket of fresh white snow, and the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad kept running throughout the weekend.

Thanksgiving weekend was the final weekend of the season for the Yosemite family attraction, and it was magical to ride the train while snowflakes were falling from the sky. When we first arrived at the train station, we kept warm from the cold winter air by walking around their gift shop. The kids were able to pick out a small souvenir while sipping on a cup of hot cocoa.

Once our train tickets were purchased, we walked over to the Thornberry Museum where the kids were able to participate in an educational scavenger hunt for the different historical items located throughout the museum.

It wasn’t long until we hear the whistle of the train coming near, and the kids ran up to the train tracks to watch the beautiful steam train come chugging into the station. All the passengers came off the train, and our children had the unique opportunity of watching the steam engine turn around at the roundabout.

As soon as the train conductor shouted, “all aboard,” our kids found a perfect seat at the back of the train. We felt the cold air on our faces as the train embarked on a one hour ride through the forest surrounding the Yosemite National Park. While on the train ride, the conductor talked to the kids about the history of the Sugar Pine Railroad making it a great educational experience.

The train made a brief stop for families to have a restroom break or build a snowman in the snow. Our children were running around the forest having a snowball fight before the conductor invited the into the steam room to see the various parts of the train.

My kids were singing their favorite holiday songs as the train slowly made its way back to the train station to pick-up the next set of guests.

We can’t wait to return to the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad in the springtime to enjoy the moonlight train ride and barbecue. The train is seasonal, and I recommend confirming their operating times before planning a visit. When visiting the Yosemite area, don’t miss planning a ride on the Sugar Pine Railroad. It is guaranteed to leave special memories in the hearts of your children for years to come.
