12 Fun Ways to Relax and Alleviate Stress During the Weekend

Reports have linked high stress levels to increased illnesses and shortened life spans. This is why you deserve to relax and unwind after a hectic week at work. Not only will this help your health, but it will also drastically improve your quality of life and sense of well-being.

If you’re thinking of some creative or fun ways to relax and spend the weekend, the tips in this article will help you do just that. 

Netflix and Chill

Nothing is quite as relaxing as doing nothing all weekend except binge-watching your favorite movies or TV shows. And the easiest way to do this is to use your favorite streaming services

Netflix and chill in this context, doesn’t necessarily mean using Netflix alone. There’s Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, Peacock, and many more. The good news is there’s always something new to watch and just enjoy. And if you get tired of watching –most people don’t if the TV shows are interesting– you can try the next activity.

Take a Walk Around the City

This goes without saying that your city is safe and you can take a walk around the town. 

Walking is not just a great way to lose weight if you’re trying to, but it also provides you with the opportunity of finding local gems that you ordinarily wouldn’t have. People often find walking to be helpful when they’re feeling cooped up in the house. Plus, it can be a relaxing way to spend a Saturday evening. 

Go Explore Nature

Sometimes, spending time in nature can help you relax, thus lowering your blood pressure in the process. So go for a walk in the forest or park if there’s one in your city. 

You can also go mountain hiking, fishing, kayaking, or indulge in one of the many nature-based activities that are available to you. The best part is most of these places are free to explore.  

Go Picnicking in the Park

Grab a few of your friends or family members, pack a lunchbox or a picnic basket, and head to the park for a picnic. Some moms find that this works when they’re trying to get away from a busy or noisy environment at home. So, they head out to the park by themselves whilst leaving the kids in the house. 

However, it can be a bit lonely if you’re there alone. Just take your pet along with you if you feel like you might get lonely. And if you don’t have a pet, get some music, and just go do some people-watching.

People-watching can be fun in the sense that you try to figure out what’s going on with them, their story, or the reason they’re in the park. But it’s best if you do this with another person. 

Read a Book

Nothing is quite as relaxing as picking up a couple of fantasy books and reading them throughout the weekend. This is the perfect idea for a lazy weekend. Just get one or more fiction books, pick up a bottle of wine and just stay indoors reading the entire weekend. 

This, by far, is an incredibly relaxing way to spend the weekend, doesn’t cost much, and helps you distress completely. People often find that spending the weekend reading fiction books not only makes them feel great about the coming week, but it also makes them feel better prepared.

Cook a Favorite or New Meal

While some people dislike cooking and consider it stressful, many love the activity and consider it relaxing. If you’re in the latter group, then you should prepare your favorite meal, or try a new recipe

This is particularly rewarding for people who have not eaten any decent meals during the week. Preparing your favorite meals can serve as a way to reward yourself after a good week or a palate-cleansing ritual of sorts.

Get Pampered

Pampering in this instance means going to the spa, getting a massage, getting your nails done, getting a facial, and other relaxing activities. After the spa, you can just go right back to the house, and relax with a glass of wine. 

Many tend to sleep off after the massage as it can be super-relaxing. If you can afford it, have the masseuse come to your home instead. This means you can go right to sleep afterward. 

Go Dancing or Partying

For some people, their perfect idea of a fun weekend is one where they party, dance, or just hang out at various places. If this is you, it’s time to check out the latest “watering holes” and go there. 

You can start with clubbing on Friday night, followed by a party on Saturday. Then go do other fun stuff on Sunday. This is best done with one or more of your friends and can be a lot of fun. 

Go to the Beach 

If you live in SoCal or other sunny towns in the south, you can pretty much go to the beach at any time. Although the best times would be during the summer and fall, you can still go during the spring and winter. 

And don’t assume that if you’ve been to one beach, it’s the same all-around. That’s not true. All beaches have their unique energy and vibe. The one thing they all have in common, however, is that you can have a lot of fun or relax there.   

Spend Time With Family and Friends

 

There’s no better group of people to spend time with than your friends and family. So, hang out with your loved ones wherever you want. It can be at a fancy restaurant, or just by the fire pit at the back of the house. The choice is yours. 

Either way, you can unwind by just being around family. Studies have shown that spending time around your loved ones raises your oxytocin levels and improves your sense of belonging. The latter is particularly important because being out there in the world can sometimes make you feel like you’re alone. 

And this feeling of being alone can often elevate your stress levels. While you’re at it, do something fun to further flood your body with dopamine –could be playing games, watching a good movie, or a family get-together with lots of music. 

Go on a Staycation

Some people feel like they have to travel outside their city or state to have fun or do something different. That’s not true. You can go on a staycation within your city or state. 

All you have to do is identify a good getaway spot that you can visit and escape the routine of everyday life. A good staycation will help you identify hidden local gems and spots that you ordinarily wouldn’t have found. An example of a staycation is renting a beach house or townhouse on Airbnb or visiting and staying in a resort for the weekend.

Go Play Some Golf

If you love golfing, then this is a must-do weekend activity. And if you don’t know how to play golf, but are interested in learning, the weekend is a great time to start. Just go to your local golf club and sign up with them. Then request the services of a trainer. It’s pretty easy from that point on. 

Conclusion

Unless you can’t avoid it, make sure to spend the weekend resting and recharging so that you can be at your best during the next week. The weekend is yours, make the most of it and have fun while you’re at it.
