3 Simple Ways You Can Promote Gender Equality

It’s no secret that there’s a lot of equality between the genders. While efforts are being made to change this, it’s far from being done. Work still needs to be done, and while much of this is systemic, a lot can also be done by individual people.

The more effort everyone puts into this, the faster gender equality will no longer be a problem. Though this will take a lot of work and effort, there are more than a few ways to promote gender equality. There are three simple ways anyone can do this.

While they might be small, they’re a step in the right direction.

Promote Gender Equality: 3 Simple Options

1. Share Chores & Childcare

While gender inequality can be found almost everywhere, there’s one sure-fire place anyone can tackle it; the home. If you have a partner, then you should share chores equally with them. That means you both cook and clean around the home.

Childcare responsibilities should also be split equally. One person shouldn’t do more than the other based on whether they’re the mother or the father. If you want to tackle gender inequality, then start by looking at what you can change at home.

Once you’ve done that, then it’s time to start looking outward.

2. Listen & Reflect

One of the main obstacles to overcoming gender inequality is many people believe it isn’t as much of an issue as it is. They often overlook certain things, and mightn’t even know about them. Everyone has certain prejudices or stereotypes around this issue.

An effective way to counteract this is to listen to other people and reflect on what they’re saying. Doing so helps overcome unconscious biases by realizing they’re there and challenging them.

The more everyone listens and reflects, the easier it is to challenge and overcome inequality.

3. Demand Equal Salary

Women are currently paid noticeably less than men for the same work. While this has been the case for quite some time, it’s something everyone can put effort into changing. If you’re an employee, try to demand equal pay for equal work. Getting coworkers on board helps to change this.

Taking that approach forces employers to make sure everyone is paid the same. If you’re an employer, on the other hand, this should be something you aim to achieve without even being asked. Conduct a pay audit to find any disparities and address them accordingly. Make sure there aren’t any gender-based pay gaps.

Promote Gender Equality: Wrapping Up

Everyone wants to promote gender equality, but they often don’t know what they can do. While it’s a systemic issue, it’s something that everyone can help work toward. Even small steps can lead to much larger ones, as long as they’re a step in the right direction.

Demanding equal salary at work, sharing chores and childcare, and listening and reflecting are all areas anyone can engage in. Though these start off small, they’re areas everyone can take part in and which help lead to larger changes in time.
