The 4 Most Common Problems With Text (SMS) Messages

Text messages have become the most common form of communication between people these days, and that’s a problem for a few reasons. Texts are poor substitutes for face-to-face conversation because they take away important cues like body language and tone of voice. They also make us less likely to be polite or kind in our words because we don’t have to read each other’s facial expressions or hear how our words sound when spoken aloud. In this article, I’m going to share with you 4 common problems with texting so you can avoid them!

Texts Don’t Show You Tone of Voice or Body Language

When you use a text message, the person who receives it does not know what kind of tone you’re using while typing. This means that they can’t tell if your words are meant to be funny, sarcastic, serious, etc, so in other words, your message doesn’t get delivered the way you intended. If you want to find out more, read this article about why messages don’t get delivered. A good example is if you are texting with your boss. You could be saying something very nice to them, but when they read it, they could interpret it in a disrespectful tone because of the way you said it. This could lead to confusion and conflict between the two of you!

I know this is difficult for some people because we all have that one friend who types in ALL CAPS all the time, but it’s important to not get into that habit because you never know how your words will be read by other people.

Another good example is if you are leaving a voicemail for someone who doesn’t pick up their phone very often. Sometimes you can say something really mean through a voicemail without realizing it, and you can’t turn back time to rerecord the message. That’s why texts are a better choice if you want to be sure that your words aren’t misinterpreted or misunderstood when they’re read by the recipient.

You Are Less Likely to Be Polite or Kind in Texts Because There Are No More Boundaries

A major problem with texting is that there are no more boundaries between people. This means that you can easily say things that you wouldn’t normally ever say in person to someone’s face or on the phone. Because of this, it makes it so much easier for us to be rude and mean over text. Our words have a lot more power over the people we text with because they are not being shown to us in person.

Texting Doesn’t Always Make Things Less Distant Between People

It’s a common assumption that texting makes relationships less distant because it’s easier to keep in touch with people. While this is true, it also has a downside that not many people know about. Because of texting, you can have several conversations going on at once without realizing it. For example, if you have five different text conversations going on right now with different people, you will have a hard time keeping track of everything. If they were in the same room as you and told you something important, it’s easier for you to remember because there are no distractions!

Also, if someone texts you something that is difficult or embarrassing for them to say in person, it can be a huge deal-breaker for you as a friend. For example, if one of your friends told you they didn’t like your new hairstyle even though they would never say it to your face, the friendship could be damaged from that text message. Even though it’s easier to keep in touch with people through texting, it can also make relationships less close and more distant because of the miscommunication between people.

You Cannot Read Emotions Through Texts, So It’s Hard to Know How Someone Felt About What You Just Said/Did

It is definitely not easy to know someone’s emotions through texts. For example, if you broke up with your significant other over text, you wouldn’t be able to tell if they were really upset or just acting that way. This can lead to disagreements between people and confusion about how someone actually feels, which is definitely something you should avoid!

Another good example is if you are doing an assignment with your friend over the phone where you have to call each other back and forth. You could be having a great conversation one minute, and then your friend could be really quiet the next. You would have no idea what’s going on or how to fix it because you couldn’t read their emotions through the phone call. This is definitely something that can cause problems between people when they are trying to communicate over text messages.

Texting is the most common form of communication these days, but it also has its downsides. It can be hard to know people’s emotions or read any body language that they might have been trying to convey in a text message for example. So now that you know the 4 most common problems with text messages, you can avoid them and have a better experience!
