4 Reasons to Get a Tutor Early in the School Year

Many kids will need to work with a ap calculus tutor at some point in the school year either for one particularly challenging subject or for overall study skills improvement. The child may be in elementary school or they may be entering their college prep years. More often than not students wait until there is a particular problem before they start investigating one-on-one tutoring and, unfortunately, fall far behind by the time they start their sessions. It’s definitely beneficial to work with a tutor early in the school year so that students can stay on track academically and maintain positive feelings about education.

Keep self-esteem high
Most students have one subject that gives them more difficulty than all the others. It’s that one topic or series of topics that makes the student want to avoid learning and eventually view school as a negative experience. Once a student feels they are unable to do well on a particular topic they will likely avoid it for the rest of their academic career. However, when students work with a tutor consistently throughout the year they have the opportunity to tackle these subjects in a safe and positive environment so their self-esteem stays high and they maintain the joy of learning.

Advanced placement classes
Older students will likely be enrolled in one or more AP classes in order to help them with their college applications. AP classes are great because they can impress a college admissions officer and also count for college credit at some universities. However, it’s a lot to ask high school student to study at the college level on their own. When students work with a private tutor or join small group tutoring they have the opportunity to ask specific questions about topics that interest them the most and ask the tutor to give them a study plan that will help them stay on top of things and finish all of their assignments on time.

Mental focus
It’s difficult for most students, regardless of what grade level they’re in, to adjust from two months of summer vacation back to being in the classroom Monday through Friday. Many students are still focused on summer activities and find it difficult to concentrate on their academic assignments. Tutors can really help students with study skills and efficiency so they can do well in their classes and receive good grades starting early in the semester.

Relieve stress
Working with a one-on-one tutor early in the school year helps students keep their stress low so they can enjoy school and maintain a healthy work/life balance. Difficult subjects, tests and quizzes, and seemingly endless homework assignments can make school more about stress and less about the love of learning. When students start working with a tutor before they have to deal with deficiencies, they are more likely to be able to tackle the many different things asked of them within the academic environment. This is especially true of students in the 10th through 12th grades who are focusing on college applications, part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, and AP classes in addition to their normal academic responsibilities.
