5 Ways for Your Family To Have a Healthy Vacation

Many of us feel that vacations are the perfect opportunity to let loose. But when we come back from vacation, we have piled on the pounds and we feel worse for it. A vacation is the perfect opportunity for you to break free from the domestic duties of your life, but when it comes to having a healthy vacation, what can you and the family do?

Find a Place to Rent

One of the reasons we go on vacation is to not cook, but you can rent luxury villas that allow you to have control over the food you are consuming. It can be tempting to eat a whole manner of unhealthy treats, but when we opt for rented accommodation, we can have more control over the quality of our food.

When we go to a restaurant and we want a three-course meal, we can be shocked by the calories and the amount of sugar we consume. At least, when you rent somewhere, you can create a healthy breakfast that will set you up for the day. And even if you head out and eat in restaurants and consume buffets, you should feel satisfied with the fact that you had at least one good meal.

Listen to Your Body

We all fall foul of that temptation to eat one extra piece of bread because “we’re on vacation.” Listening to your body may seem like silly advice, and it can be tough to interpret, but it’s important to remember that we don’t necessarily need three square meals a day, especially if we are eating out at buffets and are consuming more food than we are used to.

If you do your best to eat healthily while you are at home, after a few days of consuming carb-heavy pizzas and pasta, you may find yourself craving fresh vegetables. Listening to your body is always a good idea because you may not necessarily want to have lunch. A lot of the time, when we feel hungry, the reality is that if we wait 20 minutes, that sense of hunger will pass. There is a difference between having a mild tummy rumbling and those major pangs of hunger, and it’s critical to differentiate between the two.

It’s much tougher for our kids because they are growing, but it’s critical to give them that foundation by ensuring that they are eating a certain quota of fruit and vegetables on their journey. But from your perspective, you may feel better by practicing something like intermittent fasting, even though you may feel that you need to treat yourself at every turn, if you are concerned about your weight and, indeed, your health, listening to your body is a sage piece of advice.

Staying Hydrated

This is a very simple piece of advice, but is a great way to ensure that you are digesting everything and feeling your best. If you are on vacation with plenty of walking journeys, a reusable water bottle is going to be a lifesaver. If you feel tempted by all the food, it’s a good idea to drink a glass of water before you eat because you will find yourself feeling fuller quicker.

Staying hydrated is critical, not just because it can dampen your appetite, but it’s crucial for maintaining your focus, especially if you are feeling tired with jet lag. And of course, if you are more than partial to a glass of wine in the evening, ensuring that you match every glass of wine with a glass of water is going to make you feel better the next day.

Exercising in the Right Ways

Exercising is something that you may not think deserves pride of place on your vacation, but there are ways of doing it to ensure that you are giving yourself, at the very least, a base level. These days, the rule when it comes to having a baseline level of health is 150 minutes to 180 minutes of zone 2 cardio per week. This is something you can easily achieve if you sneak in a few walks.

However, if you are used to exercising and you don’t feel like this is enough, go to the pool, or just do a very simple selection of exercises in the morning. You don’t need to squat heavy and deep in order to benefit. There are simple programs that you can complete, such as the 5BX, which is focused on body weight exercises. The 5BX program is something that is recommended by many people, especially those in their 50s and older. Because it’s not about how much exercise you do, but it’s the quality. If you want to feel better, you can easily get a good quality workout done in 10 minutes before you head to the breakfast buffet!

Eat the Things You Love

The fact is that we are on vacation to enjoy yourselves, and you don’t want to feel like you are going to be miserable on vacation because you are constantly watching what is on your plate. The fact is that you are on vacation, and this means many people think they’ve got the license to eat anything and everything. Eat the things that you love, and leave the things you don’t.

Some people go on vacation and eat anything and everything, but don’t feel great for it, for example, those who have slight gluten intolerances. You want to feel better on vacation, and therefore, you need to get the balance right between treating yourself to the things you like, while also ensuring that you are not going to beat yourself up inside because you’ve eaten too much of something!

The fact is that a healthier lifestyle is not just down to what you eat. When you are on vacation, having a bit of what you fancy is not going to cause irreversible health problems in the long run. If you are exercising less than normal or consuming more carbs, the reality is that this is not going to affect your life in the grand scheme of things. So make sure that you don’t feel guilty!
