7 Ways to Stay Connected as a Family

Strong family bonds instil better behaviors in children, make them perform better in academics, have better communication, and teach them to be better friends.

When you create a good relationship with your children, you also help them learn about the world around them. Spending time together not only strengthens and builds family bonds but also provides members of the family with a sense of belonging and security. 

As a parent, it’s normal to get worried about how best to maintain a bond with your children. Sometimes, kids may be less interested in spending time with you as they grow up. Therefore, you need to look for alternative ways to stay connected. Building this bond might not happen naturally, it might cost you time and effort to cultivate and protect these bonds. 

1. Keep Up With Their Hobbies

To stay connected as a family you need to support each other’s passion. If your child is in a band, sports, scout, or any other school activity, support them in the best way possible. Whether it means attending soccer games they play or reading a book series they love, it’s paramount to support and keep up with your children’s hobbies. In case you are unsure of how to help, ask them how they need help. 

2. One-on-One Time

One-on-one time can help strengthen family bonds. You can do it by planning a doctor’s visit together, going shopping for kids prescription sports sunglasses, or sharing responsibilities such as cleaning your home. You can come up with a list of chores you wish to do together, set up a time during the week or over the weekend when everyone can carry out their chores at the same time, and let everyone sign up. 

If you have teens that may demand flexible times, give them deadlines but keep reminding them that doing chores together helps you finish the job faster. Doing chores together can also foster a sense of teamwork and to make it more exciting, plan small rewards for the work done like watching a movie together, playing a board game, or getting ice cream together. 

3. Make the Most of Mealtime

Eating together as a family can help you handle the stresses of life and the day-to-day hassles. It also tends to promote sensible eating habits for proper weight management. Choose a few nights when you can all gather around a dinner table, eat something, and have a conversation. During this time, don’t allow phones or any other electronics; just enjoy your meal free of distractions. If dinner doesn’t work due to your busy schedule, opt for breakfast. 

4. Do Group Activities

Doing group activities together helps create strong emotional ties. Group activities create more time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Since children learn by example, if you set a good example by encouraging group activities and getting everyone else involved, they are more likely to adopt such behaviours to other relationships. Simple activities like playing games together can help children understand more about interacting with others and teach those lessons such as kindness and the value of sharing. 

5. Relax Together

As parents, you can also stay connected with your children and other family members by doing leisurely activities together such as relaxing in the evening or watching a movie, playing board games, coloring, playing tag, among other activities that interest children. Today’s technology makes it easy to stream any movie or animated show that your kids are interested in.

6. Get On Their Level

Getting to the level of a child as an adult can help them master their work and succeed in all they do. Get to the level of your child by doing what they want you to do whether it is spending more time at a playground or children’s park, coloring, playing games, among other activities. By getting to their level you will be able to know their dislikes, their habits, their desires, and an understanding of specific learning needs. 

7. Chaperone and Volunteer

Group activities like volunteering together can lead to a happy and grateful family. Giving your energy and time to make someone else’s life better can be a powerful learning experience and can be a source of strength for any given relationship. Volunteering can also expose children to different people and make them appreciate more, be empathetic, and be less self-centred.

With the modern fast-paced family setup, it’s easy to forget about how important spending time with family is. For children, quality time is the greatest gift to give them. Every day you are given opportunities to spend time with your family and create some good bonding because family time builds children’s self-esteem, develops positive behaviors, encourages communication, and can help your child improve their academic performance.
