A Royal Treat: The King and I at The Segerstrom Center for the Arts

We attended as a guest of the venue

The Lincoln Center Theater Production presents the highly-acclaimed Rodgers & Hammerstein’s, The King and I, directed by Bartlett Sher at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts from February 27th through March 11th. I had the honor of attending the opening night of the production with my oldest son and was captivated by the story, the music, and the acting.

The production is based on Margaret Landon’s novel, Anna and the King of Siam (1944). My son and I took our seats in the theater, and the minute that the curtain rose, we were entranced. Through the beauty of music, we were told the story of Anna Leonowens who was a British teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The love the King and Anna Leonowens have for each other unfolds for everyone in the audience to see, except for to them.

What most families expect when coming to see a Rodgers & Hammerstein’s production is phenomenal music, and this production delivers that blended with the power of storytelling.

After seeing the production, I had wished that I had brought my teenage daughter to see it as well. Anna Leonowens was such a powerful woman during a time when women were not allowed to have a voice, and yet, she did not let that stop her. It is crucial for young women of this generation to know their self-worth, embrace their strengths, and to not ever be suppressed by men.

Not only was there beautiful music and storyline, but also exotic costumes. As I watched the production, I felt like the costumes, and stage design made me feel like I was in the 1800’s.

The King and I is perfect for children and adults of all ages to see. It is full of charm, intelligence, and romance. Don’t miss bringing your children to see it at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts until March 11th. Tickets are currently available online.
