A Year with Frog and Toad at South Coast Repertory

We attended as guests of South Coast Repertory.

The fabulous, Tony Award nominated musical, A Year with Frog and Toad, retuned to excited audiences at the South Coast Repertory (SCR) this November via their Theatre for Young Audiences series. The musical is based on the classic children’s books written by Arnold Lobel, which have captivated readers for generations with their whimsical characters who explore of the meaning of true friendship in charming storylines. Lobel’s daughter, Adrianne Lobel, commissioned the musical in 2002, which had huge success both on and off Broadway.

A Year with Frog and Toad, catalogs a year between two unlikely and utterly opposite friends. Frog is a gregarious and adventurous fellow, while Toad is a shy and somewhat grumpy companion. No matter their differences, or the rift that threatens to form in their friendship, they discover the important lesson that neither is really happy when the other is not, and the value of putting someone else before oneself.

We especially loved the music and humor of the show, which you could tell was specifically geared toward young audiences, but very much enjoyable by adults as well. SCR’s smaller, intimate environment is also well suited to youth audiences because there is really no bad seat in the house!

Beginning November 27th, SCR will present it’s 36th annual production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This timeless Dickens’ classic is a hit year after year with it’s tale of the Ghosts of Christmas past, present and yet-to-come teaching Ebenezer Scrooge about the true meaning of Christmas.

Tickets are currently on sale at the SCR box office.

With it’s wide array of offerings, South Coast Repertory most certainly has a little something for every theater lover in your family. Located just steps from South Coast Plaza, it is the perfect destination for date night, girl’s night out, or, as we chose, a lovely mother-daughter afternoon.
