Skateboarding Fundraiser Being Held to Fight Diabetes

Each year, 1.9 million people will hear these words: “You have diabetes.” In Orange County, there are approximately 250,000 diabetics, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

I know it feels as if we just finished supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October with an overwhelming amount of media, events, advertising – and PINK everything. However, did you know that November is American Diabetes Month?

Unfortunately, this crippling disease denoted by the color RED kills more than AIDS and breast cancer combined, according to the ADA. In my own family, my grandfather and mother were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and my niece faces a life of insulin injections with Type 1 diabetes.

“Everyone seems to know someone who suffers from diabetes. At the current rate, diabetes is expected to reach pandemic levels in the coming years,” said Monet Quick-Smits, marketing, communications and events manager, ADA.

“Stop Diabetes” is the Association’s movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on the lives of millions of individuals and families across the nation.

To raise funds and awareness of this deadly disease, the Association has partnered with the National Skateboarding League, the Collegiate Skate and Volcom at Skate 4 Your School on Saturday, November 15, noon at Volcom Headquarters.

“The day will not only promote the importance of exercise in prevention of diabetes (type 2), but will be filled with live music, free skate, competition, food, raffles, awards and more,” concludes Quick-Smits. You can register by e-mailing [email protected], or come the day of to register.

So, this November, think RED and pledge today to join the millions to Stop Diabetes®. Take the Pledge today: http://www.stopdiabetes.com.

Even if you don’t do it for yourself, do it for someone you love.
