I know it’s a school night, but when the Discovery Center sends an invitation to experience Animal Grossology, how can we stay home? I packed up the kids and hit the road towards Santa Ana.

An enthusiastic scientist, Aaron, welcomed us. We quickly found a seat near the stage located just inside the entrance. Aaron told us a bit about the exhibit then encouraged us to stay and participate in the Human Grossology panel. Ronan (8) was asked to join the panel as Professor Pygmalion. Professor Pygmalion and Professor Kawasaki, another member of the audience, quizzed the audience about facts about urine, burps, sneezes, vomit, passing gas and hiccups that are produced within our bodies. There was lots of laughter among the kids and adults.

After the Q & A session, the kids and I entered the Animal Grossology exhibit. The exhibit has a large submarine to explore and many interactive learning stations: Owls, penguin scat, slimy bugs, Dung Beetles and so on. The exhibits were interactive and interesting for my kids ranging in age from 5 to 8 years. My younger kids had fun with the hands on stations while my 8 yr old read and grasped the scientific concepts.

The boys enjoyed assembling an owl skeleton on the computer and my daughter giggled while learning about penguin scat (poop). They also played the “slim game” and discovered that the hag fish is the slimiest of all slimy bugs. The kids also learned about flies, aka vomit slurpers. Did you know that flies feed by barfing digestive acids onto solid foods to dissolve food into a liquid? GROSS!

If you haven’t the experienced the traveling exhibits at the Discovery Center, I’m sure you’ve driving by the building a million times. The center is visible from the 5 freeway; its landmarks are the giant cube and dinosaur near the 5, 22 and the 57 interchange, making it easily accessible. The #animalgrossology exhibit truly lived up to their claim of the “ickiest exhibit”, it was great fun!
