Top 200 Sight Words for Kindergarten

Posted by on Sep 8, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

It is hard to believe that fifteen years ago, I started teaching in my first classroom.  My passion has always been working with children who have disabilities. Regardless of any child’s ability, the need for children to know some basic sight words remains the same.  Sight words help children become fluent in the words they will see most frequently in their reading; if they know these words and don’t have to work so hard at decoding them, their overall reading fluency and comprehension increases.   Here are the top 200 sight words for kindergarten. I recommend practicing these words in batches of 25.  Once your child can read all 25 quickly with two or less errors, move onto the next 25.  Continue to build onto their sight word base while always reviewing the previous lists so they remain fluent...

Becoming a parent is one of the most rewarding things my husband and I have ever done.  I don’t think we ever realized how much we could love and how hard we would work to protect anyone in life until we had our children.  In planning for our family, we had a lot of questions about how to make sure our children are protected in case the worst did actually happen. The beauty industry is filled with products that we all love for our own reasons.  The most important tip is to pick the products that work best for you; what works for your friend or sister may not work for you. After you find them, use them consistently and allow at least 4-6 weeks of consistent use before making a final decision on how effective the product is. Products do not have to be expensive either.  Eucerin sent a few samples for me to try and while not all of them were...

The Best Margarita Recipe (Giveaway)

Posted by on Aug 9, 2013 in Giveaways, Recipes | 6 comments

Four years of living in the desert taught us one important thing…we really love a good margarita!  After a few years of practice, here is one of the BEST margarita recipes that is super easy to make at home!  It is perfect for drinks with your spouse or to make when you have friends over or host that backyard BBQ. Use 1 part tequila…if you are making a single cocktail, a small shot will do.  The reason I break this into “parts” is because it makes making it a breeze. If all you have is a measuring cup in a condo on vacation, you can still make this. 🙂 We use Costco’s Anejo tequila and love it, but when we want pure magic or are entertaining, we use Patron Anejo. It tastes so pure and clean…we guarantee you will...

I love making smoothies and juices for our family; I love that we can get so many fruits and vegetables into one simple snack or meal.   There are a ton of great smoothie and juice recipes but to find one that includes spinach as its main ingredient that everyone in the family loves is a rare find. I have been making this healthy Spinach and Fruit Juice Recipe since the start of the year and it is truly one of our favorites.  It requires only a few simple ingredients as well! We were running low on produce in our refrigerator so I needed to stock up; we were heading to LA for an event so we stopped by Smart and Final’s new LA location.  Thankfully I had a cooler in the car from one of our many beach days....

Thor Freudenthal on the Green Screens, 3D, and Percy Jackson: Sea of Mosters

We interviewed the cast of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters earlier this summer after we saw a sneak peek screening of the first thirty minutes of the movies.  In case you missed them, we brought you the full scoop from our interviews with Brandon T. Jackon, Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, and Leven Rambin.  Today we wanted to share one final piece on Thor Fruedenthal.  It was mesmerizing to watch the mini screening, but to talk with Thor afterwards about how me made the Percy Jackson film was pretty exciting. Of course when you see a movie with intense action and scenery, you always wonder how much green screen time there truly was in the actual filming of the movie.  Thor shared with us that in most of Percy Jackson the location shooting was done with digital extensions here and there....

Preparing for a Fire Evacuation

Posted by on Aug 5, 2013 in Featured, Hot Topics | 0 comments

We just relocated to Southern California last summer and with the move, we knew that fires would be one of the new forces of mother nature we would need to deal with.  I came home from a reader event to see the Falls Fire from the entrance to our neighborhood. I have to admit that seeing this sent me to a mental place I hadn’t really gone yet so I immediately started pulling together what we would need to pack for a fire evacuation. When looking at the exterior of your home, take all of your furniture cushions inside your garage.  This will protect them from the falling ash and the awful smell that comes with it. Close and lock all of your windows and turn off your air conditioning if the smoke is close.  The smell is so...

Southern California Lake Elsinore Falls Fire Photo Update

A brush fire grew out of control in Lake Elsinore today.  The Falls Fire started just south of the Ortega Highway in Morrell Canyon. The Inland Empire is closely affected and mandatory evacuations are in effect for Rancho Capistrano and Decker Canyon. Flames are threatening structures and over 800 acres have burned to this point. Flames have jumped the Ortega Highway and the Falls Fire is burning eastward. The Falls Fire is very close to threatening homes which has fire fighters and area residents concerned.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the area. These photos are taken from Ladera Ranch and the smoke plume is growing rapidly. The Ortega Highway is closed because of the Falls Fire in Lake Elsinore at Antonio Parkway near Ladera...

Interview with Leven Rambin on Clarisse in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

Posted by on Aug 5, 2013 in Featured, Film | 0 comments

Earlier this summer, a group of us were able to sit down with the main cast of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters to chat about the movie, their characters and their insights. Leven Rambin plays Clarisse in the film and shared some perspective on how her character treats others and the path to acceptance. Leven’s character is the odd man out, as is Tyson. Clarisse is a bully of sorts for reasons that are not always blatantly aware to others. Yet, while Tyson has a more visible quirk that makes him feel insecure, he still feels like an outcast. Leven talked about how the other characters are unsure of how to treat him and also how Clarisse struggles to be accepted socially in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Rambin really enjoys that despite these differences and struggles within these...

Eureka Baking Company offers Healthy Breads for Families

Posted by on Jul 10, 2013 in Dining | 5 comments

I love finding new products, especially ones that benefit our family. One thing that we are pretty picky about in our house is the bread we eat; there are SO many breads out there that are full of unhealthy ingredients. When we had the chance to try new breads from Eureka Baking Company, it was a perfect fit. Eureka Baking Company has three new breads that they believe are so awesome that they are worth their weight in gold. And there are many awesome things about their bread indeed!  First off, all of their breads are USDA organic.  They are also free of High Fructose Corn Syrup, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.  Finish that off with the fact that they are certified vegan and I believe the breads aim to please a lot of people ranging from those who...

The changes when you become a parent are plentiful and so fulfilling… Before children, you travel is about you, where you want to go, and the cost involved to get you there.  When you have children, you realize the amazing opportunity you have to show them the world.  Hopefully, as your children get older, places will interest them and you will incorporate everyone’s desires into your annual travel plans.  Regardless, the cost involved in family travel is far more expensive so be sure you plan accordingly. Do you remember those days when you used to wake up, get ready for work, and head out the...

Our New Addiction: Rooibee Red Tea (and why you will be Addicted, too)

Posted by on Jul 9, 2013 in Dining, Featured | 0 comments

We have a new addiction. Rooibee Red Tea.  It’s a crazy combination of taste and natural goodness that we love and have a sneaking suspicion you will, too!  What brought on this addiction? 1.  Rooibee Red Tea tastes incredible and is all natural: Rooibee Red Tea is made from the South African rooibos bush, which creates a unique combination of flavor that is naturally caffeine free and loaded with antioxidants.  We love the light flavor and that one bottle is only 80 calories.  Many of us are health conscious; Rooibee Red Tea allows you to have a bit of flavor in a mid-calorie beverage that is actually healthy for you to drink. 2.  Rooibee Red Teas can be enjoyed by the entire family: Our children do not drink soda unless it is a special occasion…so we love that our...

A Classic Story…Told in a New Way Many of us have our own memories of The Lone Ranger and Tonto and will appreciate that the story is modernized while still staying true in many ways to the classic story and characters that originated in the late 1930’s.  I imagine that for some it may veer too far off from the original, but it also veers enough to make the story current for young generations.  Maybe it will cause some researching to be done to learn more about the original story and perhaps people will simply enjoy this new...

Five Steps for Picking a Financial Advisor

Posted by on Jun 27, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

Interview at least three candidates. Ask your friends, family, accountant, or attorney for recommendations. Financial Advisors also work closely with health insurance brokers, casualty insurance agents, and HR consultants, so if you work with any of these professionals they may be able to make a recommendation as well. Financial Advisors adhere to the professional ethic of confidentiality so neither your information, nor the information of who gave the referral, will be shared with either party. Also, some Financial Advisors offer educational workshops, so this is a good way to meet them and see their communication style. Make an appointment to interview the Financial Advisor. This appointment can be at their office (preferable), or over the phone. This initial appointment should be complimentary, but you will want to confirm that there is no fee. Review with the prospective Financial Advisor:...

3 Techniques for Calming Bedtime Fears

Posted by on Jun 25, 2013 in Family, Hot Topics | 0 comments

It is very common for children to become fearful of going to sleep at bedtime.  Most of the time, everything is going beautifully and then suddenly, a child becomes very fearful claiming they cannot go to sleep with the lights off.   In my years as an educator and parent coach, it seemed to happen more often right around the age of three.  This is a rapid time of development for children where they can struggle to make sense of the deeper comprehension they have of the world, especially when paired with their still three-year-old problem solving skills. Remember that this is a scary time in your child’s mind so they may not want to talk about it or may not have the exact words to communicate what is going on.  They may try distraction techniques such as asking...

Brady and McKenzie, two of the main characters, must try to return to present day.  When they accidentally alter the romantic storyline, things may be changed forever when Tanner falls for McKenzie and biker girl Lela starts swooning...
