  You can catch two Christmas boat parades this weekend in Dana Point and Newport Harbor. The OC Model Engineers are hosting their monthly free public rides in Costa Mesa with a visit with Santa. The free Wilderness Access Day is in Bommer Canyon this Saturday and they are hosting a family hike that day at 9:00am. Family hikes seem to be the theme this weekend with additional hikes offered on Friday at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, on Saturday at the Muth Center, Crystal Cove, and Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve, and on Sunday at Laguna Niguel Regional Park.   CHILL at the Queen Mary in Long Beach opens for the season this Friday. I took my family last year and we all had a blast ice skating, wearing down parkas to survive the Ice Kingdom, and sliding down ice slides. The Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, the OC Zoo in Orange, and the Shipley Nature Center in Huntington Beach all have morning classes for preschoolers this week. There is a Tot Walk this Friday morning at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park in Laguna Niguel as well as a Wild Tales class at the Muth Center in Newport Beach.   Before another week goes by I must remind you that Adventure Playground in Huntington Beach is open for the season! It is open June 22 – August 21, 2015 and is located in Huntington Central Park. It is a unique playground where kids (and adults!) can raft on a small pond, fly down a mud slide, and build forts with real hammers, nails and saws (saws for 8 and older). The rope bridge is down for repairs this season. Cost is $3 for kids and free for adults 16 and older. My boys have gone for the last several years and look forward to going again soon.   I have to share the wonderful experience I had at a couple outdoor events last weekend with my six year-old. We participated in the Canyon Explorers Critter Scene Investigation with Let’s Go Outside at Bommer Canyon. Miss Kelly kept the kids engaged for the entire 1-1/2 hour program. My son did not want it to end. We also hiked to Little Treasure Cove in Crystal Cove State Park to take advantage of a super low tide. We spent a fascinating two hours exploring the tidepools and caves that are often inaccessible. Both programs were free although parking was $15 at Crystal Cove. How fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful area with access to quality, low cost outdoor programs for our families.
