Parents Guide to Teaching Children to have Quiet Time

Posted by on Aug 24, 2013 in Family | 1 comment

When was the last time you took time to just notice your breath and the beauty around you?  If you are like many busy families, it’s been a while.  Teaching your children about a daily quiet time can be a great way to help them find peace and restoration in their daily lives.  Here are three simple ideas to get your family started… 1. Set Expectations It’s important to set the expectations with your child before they get started.  For example, with young kids you may want to explain why a quiet time is important, how long they will be taking a quiet time and provide them with some independent activities to help them be successful.   For some children, it might also be helpful to use a timer and start with 10-15 minute sessions.  Some helpful independent quiet time...

Parents Guide for the Transition to Middle School

Posted by on Aug 19, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

The transition to middle school can be big step for everyone in the family, but with some simple preparations the journey can be a little easier. Here are three simple, yet helpful parenting tips to transition your son or daughter from elementary to middle school. Bring a Sense of Humor One important tip when transitioning to middle school is a sense of humor. When I mentioned to my 13 year old son that I was writing a piece about the transition to middle school, he said “You are now officially the mom in the the Dairy of a Wimpy Kid movie.” and I just laughed.  One of the biggest gifts you can give your son or daughter during this transition phase is a sense of humor and a very open heart. Of course you need to prepare them and...

How to Prepare Children for Kindergarten

Posted by on Aug 17, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

How do you best prepare a child to go to their first day of school? It’s a day you will long remember and certainly a big step, but with a little preparation, you will both be on your way to a great day. Each child and parent has their own special personality and how they might react may vary depending on a variety of factors, but following these four simple steps can set the stage for a smooth transition for everyone. Prepare In Advance Is this a brand new school experience for your child? Or Is your child familiar with the school because they have a sibling in an older grade? If it’s a new school experience,  it would be helpful to spend some time at the school before school starts. During the summer, take a walk to school...

The funny noises will keep your kids giggling!  Eventually the food makes its way through the doggie and out the end. And the kids think it is absolutely hilarious!  Keep feeding your doggie and collecting the poop!  The first person to collect 3 poops, wins!  To learn more, visit Jaime is a homeschooling mama of two, wife of one,...

How to Connect with your Children

Posted by on Aug 2, 2013 in Family | 0 comments

Would you like to feel great and have fun with your family this summer?  If you answered “Yes” , I have the magic answer for you.  Just do what your kids are doing, no questions asked, just do it. The other day, my 12 year old son was telling me about the different things he does for his junior lifeguard program and I was floored.  He said, “So after our running drills, we put on our swim fins and swim past the waves to the kelp beds. When we get there, we find an opening and just swim through kelp.  It’s so much fun!” When finished sharing, I said “Sounds fun, I wish I could do that.”  And then he said “You can. How about after junior guards you and I can swim out there and you can check...

Tips to Foster Effective Communication in your Family

Posted by on Jul 31, 2013 in Family | 0 comments

I teach kids that we make our best choices when we understand where the other kid is coming from. Most parents hope their children develop this level of empathy and use it as a guide. But hope isn’t a parenting strategy. In my book, Teaching Kids to Be Good People, I help parents teach kids to develop empathy and respect for themselves and others. Effective communication is key to empathy training. These tips can improve communication in your family so your child becomes a more effective communicator and a better friend: 1.  Give kids time to decompress. When kids come home talk will flow more naturally after the shoes come off, food’s dished out, and everyone has had time to relax. 2. Show that you’re interested. We’re all a little distracted these days, but if we want kids to...

It’s Official! I Graduated From Monsters University #MonstersUEvent

Posted by on Apr 25, 2013 in Disney, Events, Featured, Uncategorized | 6 comments

Two weeks ago, I hopped on a plane to San Francisco to attend Monsters University. Although I thought I was just going to San Francisco, from the moment I stepped off the plane, I quickly realized that I had become immersed in the movie “Monsters University.” While attending school at Monsters University, I had many vigorous classes before finally graduating. When our plan landed, we got on a bus that brought us to the University where we would learn how to be the top scarers. As our first feet landed on the campus, we were greeted by the University band. The band was a festive greeting for our first day of school. As I walked under the arches of Monsters University, I felt that same feeling that I always got on the first day of school. The marching band...

Best of Bruxie Huntington Beach

Yesterday, Bruxie opened their doors on their newest Orange County location in Huntington Beach. This new Bruxie location is unlike any other with a walk-up ordering window. The new Bruxie location brings all of Orange County’s favorite waffle sandwiches to the beachside town in an open-aired restaurant. While dining at the pre-opening of Bruxie Huntington Beach, we had a chance to sample some of the delicious food bring served at the restaurant, and we picked out our top five favorites for our “Best of Bruxie Huntington Beach” list. First is the savorful Smoked Salmon Lox and Dill sandwich with cream cheese. Bruxie uses Michele Cordon Bleu cold smoked salmon with a herb cream cheese, and then tops it with cucumbers and chives. This sandwich is one of our favorites to order for breakfast. Second is the Bruxie Irish Nachos....

Billy Elliot Immerses Audience Into an Unforgettable Experience

Posted by on Apr 20, 2013 in Events | 0 comments

My husband and I had the opportunity to attend Billy Elliot the Musical and it was certainly a memorable experience. This amazing show will be playing at the Segerstom Center until April 28th and tickets start at just $20. As with previous shows at the Segerstrom, patrons can experience pre-show activities an hour prior to show time. Activities include: Dancers from Anaheim Ballet who will demonstrate ballet exercises and answer questions, photo opportunities with show-themed props, and the documentary “Finding Billy” which relates the casting process for finding the 3 original “Billys” on Broadway. First off, I want to note that this musical does contain strong language and onstage smoking, so I wouldn’t recommend it for children. Language aside, Billy Elliot the Musical is a wonderful, even immersive experience. The show takes place in 1984 in Northern England during...

How to talk about the Boston Marathon with your children

Posted by on Apr 17, 2013 in Family, Featured | 0 comments

It was a tragic, horrific and evil incident that occurred at the Boston Marathon. Thousands of innocent people were caught off guard as bombs were set off killing 3 and injuring over a hundred. As there is a lot of news coverage and talk about this awful event it is important to know how to talk to your child about it. Here are some tips: 1) Stay calm: Children pick up stress and anxiety from their parents. It is important that as a parent stay calm when discussing the incident because you are their sense of security. It is important that the sense of security they get from you is not weakened. Children need reassurance that incidents like this are rare and isolated and often very far away from them. The odds are that this would never happen to...

When you first enter the store you can’t help but notice how clean and organized it is. Everything is labeled and there are signs hanging above each aisle informing you where each item is located. There are bags and ties at all of the end caps as well. Each barrel or bin has its...

There is a pizza place in Aliso Viejo that has the best garlic knots.  It’s called Porky’s Pizza. I love these little knots so much that sometimes I will order them to take with me to potlucks. I have always wanted to try to make my own garlic Knots so the other day I went out to trader Joe’s and picked up some of their pre-made Pizza dough and a few ingredients for the garlic sauce. To begin, roll out the pizza dough to 1/3 inch thick on lightly floured surface such as your kitchen counter or a large wooden board. Cut into strips about 1×4 inches. Tie each strip in a knot and place on a baking sheet. The dough stretches so the strips do not have to be super long. Bake the knots until they start to...

This week I learned a very valuable lesson in home security: Don’t get too relaxed with your personal property in your house. Like most everyone, we allow other people beside family into our home.  While I always realized that anything in my house was susceptible to theft, I had always hoped that anyone I let into my house would never take advantage of me. As it turns out hoping doesn’t get you very far. Unfortunately our house experienced a robbery this week, and looking back I am pretty frustrated with myself for being so careless and lazy. My husband works extremely hard for our family and to have monetary items taken from us is very infuriating. When I had time to reflect on what I could have done differently I came up with a list of 5 things, and...

Ep·ic [ep-ik] adjective: Majestic; impressively great. That is the definition I would give for Epic Skin Care Salon in beautiful Newport Beach. Shelby and I both had amazing facials this morning from Delaree Bau, owner of Epic Skin Studio. From the moment you walk in you will feel all the tension in your body relax. The ambiance in the salon is really soothing. The lights are dimmed, there are candles lit, and there are warm woods throughout the waiting area. It is very easy to find your Zen while in this Salon. The Treatment room is also very calming. Delaree has a bed that is so comfortable you will probably fall asleep for the entire duration of your treatment. It was padded with an egg crate, a mattress cover, and lots of warm blankets. The facial we had was...

Interesting facts about Bananas

Posted by on Jan 23, 2013 in Family, Recipes | 0 comments

Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes. But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet. DEPRESSION: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make...

Luna Grill-The Ultimate Kabobary in Lake Forest

Posted by on Jan 21, 2013 in Dining, Featured, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Fresh, healthy, and flavorful. Those are 3 words I would use to describe Luna Grill. This fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant is known for its all-fresh, high-quality, made-to-order menu. All the meats on the menu are all natural and have no added growth hormones or antibiotics. Their chicken has no added sodium, saltwater, or seaweed extract. Their salads are from a pesticide free farm and their oils are free of trans fats and hydrogenated fats. Kabobs are their specialty, and all of Luna Grills kabobs are prepared on metal skewers. I recently dined here and had a very pleasurable experience. When I first arrived I was really impressed with the sheer cleanliness of this place. I could practically see the sparkle coming from the floors. The decor in the restaurant felt light, refreshing and clean. Most of the furniture is bright...

Goathill Junction Railroad

Tucked away in the beautiful terrain just behind the Costa Mesa golf course lies one of Orange County’s best kept secrets: Goathill Junction Railroad. These model trains run on 5 miles of track and wind through the scenic park. The trains are small and represent 1 1/2″, 2 1/2″ and 3 1/2″ scale equipment. The seats are carpeted and you simply straddle the train like you’re sitting on a horse. There are no seat belts, so hold on to your child although the trains do not go very fast. Not only are these mini trains fun to ride on but they are FREE! They are are operated by Orange County Model Engineers Inc. so although they are free, donations are welcome and they help keep the trains running. Public rides are conducted on the third Saturday and following Sunday...

Last week I decided it would be a great idea to run to the gym instead of driving. I got dressed, put in my ear buds so I could stream Pandora from my phone and began to jog. I put my phone in my jacket pocket and before I knew it my iPhone fell out and I kicked it several feet in front of me. When I picked it up from the asphalt the entire backside was shattered, including the case itself. Fortunately, I had just received a new iPhone case in the mail from with my kids photo on it, so as soon as I got home I swapped it out. Not only did my new case cover my cracked phone, but it covered it with a cute picture of my kiddos! With you can...

How To Train Your Dragon LIVE Backstage!

If you’ve seen the DreamWorks movie, “How To Train Your Dragon”, then you may have heard of How To Train Your Dragon Live – a spectacular live action show with 13 dragons that stomp, roar, breathe fire and smoke, and even fly around the arena. Today I had the opportunity to go backstage at the Honda Center and meet a few of the dragons up close and personal. “Toothless” is one of the many dynamic dragons in the show. He was quite gentle, almost playful when we met him, and my son was very intrigued by his presence. Apparently the dragons like to be scratched under their chins so Astrid, one of the cast members took him up to greet him. The special effects within these dragons is utterly amazing. These complex creatures have the ability to move their eyes...
