Big Bear Alpine Zoo Flashlight Safari

We visited as a guest of the venue

During the month of October, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is welcoming families to bring their flashlights for an unforgettable flashlight safari. The special event is happening on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the month of October, and it is a great reason to plan a weekend getaway up to the mountains.

Since my children love animals and learning about animals, I planned a weekend getaway to Big Bear this past weekend to experience the flashlight safari. We went to the Big Bear Alpine Zoo around 5:30 pm in our beautiful Kia K900. We were dressed in warm clothes, and there was a ton of families eagerly waiting to get into the zoo for the flashlight safari.

The zoo divided families into small groups and welcomed everyone into the zoo one group at a time. We started the adventure in their lobby where they had hot cocoa for the children and animal interactions. Our kids got to get up close with a real owl, and capture a special keepsake photo for us to remember the event forever.

Then it was time for the fun to begin. Our children turned on their flashlights, and we began walking around the zoo. All of the nocturnal animals were awake and eager to see our children. The guide taught our children all about the different animals, their living habits, and their behaviors. It was an immersive educational experience.

Our kids got to see a mountain lion eating his dinner, flying squirrels, wolves, and a beautiful bobcat. The kids were able to shine their flashlights into the enclosures to see the animals awake and moving around. It was our kid’s favorite zoo experience ever!

We didn’t want the evening to end, but after seeing all of the animals, it was time to leave. Before leaving, my children gave our tour guide a big hug, and they talked about it all the way back to the Alpenhorn Bed and Breakfast where we were staying for the night.

If you are looking for something special to do with your children this month, bring them to the Big Bear Zoo to experience the flashlight safari. Plus, by supporting the zoo, you are helping them with their animal rehabilitation efforts.

Bring your own flashlights and dress warmly. Admission is $12 for adults, $9 for seniors (60+) and children from 3 to 10 years of age, and children under 3 years are free.

For reservations, please call (909) 584-1299.
