My husband and I had the opportunity to attend Billy Elliot the Musical and it was certainly a memorable experience. This amazing show will be playing at the Segerstom Center until April 28th and tickets start at just $20. As with previous shows at the Segerstrom, patrons can experience pre-show activities an hour prior to show time. Activities include: Dancers from Anaheim Ballet who will demonstrate ballet exercises and answer questions, photo opportunities with show-themed props, and the documentary “Finding Billy” which relates the casting process for finding the 3 original “Billys” on Broadway.

First off, I want to note that this musical does contain strong language and onstage smoking, so I wouldn’t recommend it for children. Language aside, Billy Elliot the Musical is a wonderful, even immersive experience. The show takes place in 1984 in Northern England during the coal miners’ year-long strike. Thus, not only is it a show about a boy’s journey of self-discovery and his love for dance; but it is also a show with strong political overtones. The cast did a wonderful job bringing the audience into 1984 Northern England. The accents were thick and the wardrobe perfectly 1984. I loved the expressions of the girls who were in Billy’s dance class and the passion of the coal minors & fellow working-class men. The dancing was phenomenal. I would attend just to see the dancing – Billy’s solos and his duet were nothing short of inspiring.

So, if you love the theatre, have a soft-spot for all-things British, love ballet, or just want to see what it’s all about, get your tickets and go see Billy Elliot the Musical. It’s a show you won’t soon forget.
