To Botox or Not To Botox?

We all want the most beautiful skin possible. We invest countless hours and dollars into finding the perfect skincare routine for our skin types. We visit dermatologists and estheticians and are diligent with our hard work. Still, at some point, you will reach a point where those fine lines and wrinkles aren’t being kept at bay by topicals alone. When you get to this point, you’re at a crossroads of whether or not you want to let yourself age naturally or if you’d like to stave off the hands of time (when it comes to your appearance) a little bit longer.

There is no right or wrong path to take. Audrey Hepburn, a natural beauty, famously talked about how she earned every wrinkle on her face – it told a story of laughter, tears, and more. Others go another route and want to look as naturally young as possible for as long as possible. Let’s look at some reasons why you may want to go in for a Botox session or why you may not.

Be Honest With Yourself

When you start to notice the fine lines and wrinkles between your eyes (your elevens) or beside your eyes (crow’s feet) or maybe your forehead wrinkles are bothering you the most – be honest with yourself about the efforts you’ve made to prevent them. If you haven’t been as consistent as you should be with products like Retinoids, eye creams, or a good collagen serum, you may not be ready for injectables. You could go the route of using an anti-aging face mask several times a week and see incredible results. Be realistic and honest with yourself about what you have been doing and what you can commit to.

Book a Consultation

One crucial step that can help you make a decision on whether or not you should go the route of Botox or other injectables like filler is simply having a consultation with a licensed provider. You can go to a plastic surgeon, a medical spa, or another facility that has board-certified treatment providers. They can thoroughly analyze your skin and recommend treatment options for you. Based on the state of your skin and the depth of your wrinkles, they can give you realistic expectations about what products will do for you and what they can’t.

Knowledge Is Power

They say that knowledge is power, and while Botox is safe and effective, it is a neurotoxin you’re having injected into your skin. Studying up on the product itself is something that puts a lot of people at ease when it comes to making their decision. Maybe you had put off having any cosmetic procedures done in the past because you were nervous about them. By understanding that the benefits strongly outweigh the risks of this quick procedure, it might be all you need to nudge you in the direction of Team Botox.

You May Need Something Else

If you’ve gone so long before deciding that Botox is the procedure for you, some of your wrinkles may be too deep to be treated by Botox. For this reason, women in their twenties now get minor treatments of the product, known as “Baby Botox,” to stave off wrinkles and fine lines altogether. In some ways, if you know you’re going the route of injectables, eventually, it’s better to start younger than older.

When your lines are no longer considered “fine” but “deeper,” you may need something else, like a filler. Fillers are used to giving us poutier lips and more prominent cheeks, but they also fill in deeper lines and wrinkles. They create volume where it’s been lost. The only downside to fillers compared to Botox is the cost. Botox is bought by the unit, whereas with fillers you purchase the entire syringe – whether you end up needing to use the whole thing or not.

As mentioned earlier, there is no right or wrong choice. Plenty of women in the spotlight has shown us that aging naturally is not only beautiful but radiates a confidence that is enviable by all. Equally, plenty of other women whose looks and confidence we admire, when we ask them their secret, they’ll tell you it’s Botox! So, the choice is yours to make, and the important thing is you make a choice you feel good about. You’re beautiful either way.
