Falling in Love with Music

Samples provided Going back to school means getting a bunch of cool new things like clothes, school supplies, maybe even a new instrument to play. If you love making music or just having fun, I have to tell you to get a Fender Ukulele. Ukulele is one of the most fun instruments to play in my opinion and what better time to learn then the beginning of a new school year. But you can’t buy just any ukulele. Many of the online companies that you purchase instruments from make it really hard to know what actually holding and playing the instrument is like. Fender ukuleles make it extremely easy to pick your favorite ukulele and even watch a demo video with the ukulele on their website. And you don’t have to stop at ukulele’s; Fender also sells acoustic guitars,...

The summer might be over for my two older kids, but my youngest still has a couple more weeks of summer to explore. That means another road trip! Opposing Forces, a performance exploring gender roles, is part of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Off Center Festival. World class B-Boy dancers, Alfredo Vergara (aka “Free”), Brysen “Just Be” Angeles, “Fever One”, Michael O’Neal, Jr. and Mozes Lateef exuded athleticism and emotion. Always powerful, they knew when to push and when to hold back with each piece. The movement was strong and expressive, even when they were exploring the “soft” side of the hip-hop world. Ms. O’Neal’s choreography was a blend of styles, with each piece conveying a message about the masculine and feminine roles through the lens of hip hop. At times upbeat, and other times dark, the performance explored...

Elijah Kelley on Music, Philanthropy and the Strange Magic of Love

Posted by on Jan 22, 2015 in Disney, Entertainment, Film, Music | 0 comments

We attended the interview as a guest of Disney Elijah Kelley portrays the role of my favorite character, Sunny, in the upcoming film “Strange Magic.” I fell in love with heart and soul of the character and after sitting down to talk with Kelley, he played a huge part in bringing the character to life. It was the first time that Kelley had done a voiceover role, and it was a little bit of a challenge for him. “I thought it was going to be easy; I thought it was going to be a piece of cake. It was like doing P90X bringing to life and understanding the world that Sunny lives in,” said Kelley. In the film, Sunny is in love with the character Dawn and has trouble expressing his love for her. All of us can relate...

We attended the interview as a guest of Disney The film, Strange Magic, takes us inside the mind of the talented director and producer George Lucas. Earlier this month, we went to Skywalker Ranch where we talked with George Lucas about the film, fatherhood, and life. Lucas is newly married and the proud father of a 33-year-old, 26-year-old, 21-year-old and an 18-month-old baby. “I won’t call it a myth because I beat that one to death with Star Wars, but this is a fairytale. Same thing only sweeter.” George Lucas Strange Magic is very different from Star Wars, and Lucas started working on the film about 15 years ago. “I love doing musicals; it harkens back to my pre-Star Wars days. I thought it would be fun to make a film that was for tween girls than Star Wars...

I attended as a guest of Ford It was the summer of 2002 and I was living the single life in New York City when American Idol made its debut on television. Who doesn’t remember Kelly Clarkson winning that very first season? Fast forward twelve years and I am living in SoCal, the mom of an almost seven year old, and American Idol is about to premiere its 14th season. Had you told me all those years ago that I would be attending a live taping of the show I would have never believed you. Well, here I was at The House of Blues in LA, enjoying an evening of talented entertainment and having a behind the scenes look. The House of Blues stage had been taken over by the iconic American Idol sign and the Ricky Minor band....

Rockin’ Family Memories at the OC Fair with the Fresh Beat Band

Posted by on Aug 9, 2014 in Entertainment, Events, Featured, Music | 0 comments

We attended as a guest of the fair The OC Fair is a 23-day annual fair held every summer at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.  For many families it has become an annual tradition to eat, play, ride and rock out. The fairgrounds’ 150 acres has been the home to the fair ever since 1949 and yields more than a million visitors each year.  Back in 2009, then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recommended the Orange County Fairgrounds be listed for sale.  A public auction was held, but before any sales agreements could be signed, two lawsuits were filed and the sale was stopped. The Preservation Society and Tel Phil Enterprises filed in the Court of Appeal and asked that the new governor Jerry Brown have the sale categorically dismissed which it was; thank goodness because where...

The Jersey Boys Interview

Posted by on Jun 30, 2014 in Entertainment, Events, Music, Theatre | 0 comments

I was given the opportunely to interview Production Stage Manager Matthew Leiner as well as cast members Hayden Milanes & Quinn VanAntwerp of Jersey Boys at the load-in. It was my first time interviewing anyone since my college days so I was a little rusty to say the least. I first sat back and watch the other press member as they interviewed the cast. Once I felt comfortable I sat down with Matthew, Hayden and Quinn and learned about their parts in making the magic happen. Before I start with the interview, let me just say that everyone was extremely kind and warm. I was blown away with the energy of the 3 interviewees even though they had just arrived from their last tour just the day before. The Jersey Boys production is a well-oiled machine. They travel across...

KSBR Birthday Bash: A Perfect Trio of Jazz, Great Food & Live Art

Posted by on Jun 8, 2014 in Entertainment, Events, Music | 0 comments

We attended as a guest of KSBR Three of my favorite things in the world are jazz, great food and art. Last Sunday was filled with all three so it was pretty much the perfect day at KSBR’s 25th Annual Birthday Bash Jazz Festival & Taste of the Bash. The bash kicked off in the afternoon with some wonderful tastes from more than 20 local restaurants, breweries, and wineries. There was something for everyone and too much to taste for any one person, but I managed to sample my fair share including:      Ceviche on cucumber coins… perfect on a hot day and refreshing strawberry mint “bruschetta”, both from Bella Collina Towne and Gold Cub in San Clemente. A healthy and delicious chopped salad with organic baby greens, with pine nuts, dried cranberries, gorgonzola, golden beets, red onion, and...

The Hollywood Bowl Kicks Off its 2014 Summer Season

Posted by on May 23, 2014 in Dining, Entertainment, Events, Family, Featured, Music | 0 comments

We attended as a guest of the Hollywood Bowl   Few experiences can compare to attending a concert at The Hollywood Bowl. Even fewer can compare to actually standing on the stage and seeing the theater from the perspective of its performers… the very stage where the LA Philharmonic performs each season. Where The Beatles, Pavarotti, Yo-Yo Ma, and so many other of the world’s most talented musicians have performed.    Nestled amongst the trees in the hills of Hollywood, this outdoor theater, is one of my favorite venues, so I was thrilled to be able to attend the launch of its 2014 Summer Season last Tuesday evening with my sister, Shan… on the stage!   The stage was stunning and provided the perfect surroundings for arts patrons and media to gather as LA Philharmonic’s CEO, Deborah Borda and...
