The Historic Warner Grand Theatre

Posted by on Aug 16, 2018 in San Pedro, Theatre, Travel | 0 comments

We visited as a guest of the venue One of my favorite things that we did when exploring San Pedro was visiting the Warner Grand Theatre. I am a little bit of a history and architecture nerd, and the minute that the trolley stopped in front of the historic theatre, I was in love. The Warner Grand Theatre opened on January 20, 1931, and was built by the distinguished team of architect B. Marcus Priteca and the artist Anthony Heinsbergen (the same team that designed the Hollywood Pantages). The theatre features some exemplary aspects of art deco like: lines, steps, sweeping curves as well as chevron patterns and the sunburst motifs. The finest examples in the Warner Grand are on the auditorium ceiling and the mezzanine ceiling. This Theatre’s design has been called “Neo-byzantine.” The theatre looks just as...

We visited as a guest of the Segerstrom Writing about musicals is something I love to do . Especially the ones at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, which happens to be the place where I recently watched School of Rock take place on the stage. I barely knew anything about this musical before being told it was coming to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, so when my mom told me we were going, I immediately called some of my Musical Theater friends and asked them about it. They told me that they didn’t want to spoil much, but they said it was hilarious, cute, and charming. Let me tell you one thing – they were not wrong. When we first arrived at the theater the first thing I noticed was all the kids that were coming to...

We visited as a guest of the venue One of my favorite things to do in Orange County is to see a show at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The Segerstrom Center for the Arts has made musicals one of my new favorite obsessions. When I started out the season this year with Something Rotten, I didn’t think any show could beat that. Well, I was very wrong. The Book of Mormon was one of the funniest theatre productions I have ever seen in my entire life. Not only was I laughing the entire time, but I also found myself getting emotional during the sad parts. There was a perfect balance of emotion, and I think I laughed more than one hundred times during the performance. The characters made everything come together so perfectly and this for sure...

When my boys first learned about Marvel Universe Live that was coming to the Honda Center, they asked if I could take them. It was the day after we were scheduled to arrive back from a week in Maui, and I was worried that we would all be too tired to enjoy the show, but my boys were showered, dressed and ready to go hours before it was time to leave. On our way to the Honda Center, my kids got even more excited about the show reading about Naz and her children’s experience going behind-the-scenes. Her kids got to learn about...

We visited as a guest of the venue Yesterday my children and I were given the opportunity to go behind the scenes of the all new Marvel Universe Live! Age of Heroes live action show at the Honda Center.  My son is a huge Marvel fan and was excited to see how the team makes the magic come alive. We were greeted by the stunt superhero team which gave us a demonstration on how they perform their moves.  Fight 101 wasn’t just hands on; it was also about mind control.  Ten hours of training daily is how this team makes sure that they are not only safe but also on point.  The show is action packed with so many moving parts, being in sync with one another is what is need to make the show a success and to keep...

The Bodyguard the Musical Delivers an Epic Performance

We visited as a guest of the venue/vehicle provided by Kia I have grown up going on a regular basis to see performances at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The creativity of the artists I have watched perform over the years made me fall in love with the arts, and then become an integrated arts student at the Orange County School of the Arts. Every time that I see a performance at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, I am blown away, especially when seeing The Bodyguard the Musical. We went to see the performance earlier in the week, and I didn’t know what to expect. I knew that the film which the musical is based on was one of my mom’s favorite movies as a teenager, and so I knew that it was going to be something...

We visited as a guest of the venue My two teen daughters have many diverse hobbies and interests, but two main obsessions – music and Harry Potter. My 16-year-old has read the series eight times through, enjoyed the films many times over, and is a member of her high school’s Harry Potter Club called The Muggles of YL. She also plays the flute and piano in the high school marching, concert, and jazz bands. My 14-year-old is similarly fanatical about the “Wizarding World” and is a violinist in her middle school orchestra. So you can imagine their disbelief followed by extreme excitement to learn they’d be treated to a behind-the-scenes rehearsal and performance of a Harry Potter film with live orchestration. The acclaimed Pacific Symphony, led by renowned conductor Jeffrey Schindler performing John Williams’ award-winning and memorable music from...

I am a major theater geek, and I love that I am raising my youngest son and daughter also to share my love for the arts. The Batsheva Dancers awed the crowds from beginning to end. It was poetry in motion watching the performers drift, almost effortlessly, across the stage. For five decades, the Batsheva Dance Company has been considered one of the foremost contemporary dance companies in the world. In the opening scene, the Emcee, played by Randy Harrison; introduces you to the ladies and gentlemen of the Kit Kat Klub! They all have wild personalities that are perfectly executed by the dancers. Randy’s voice is strong and we watch while he glides across the stage with such ease and purpose. He’s wonderful! Sally Bowles, played by Andrea Goss steals your heart with her beautiful voice. We found ourselves in complete awe...

Creating Summer Memories at MTOC Production of Beauty and the Beast

Posted by on Jul 25, 2016 in Entertainment, Theatre | 0 comments

Sponsored Once Spring break is over and we are on the tail end of the school year my mind starts thinking about summer.  I am blessed to be a stay at home mom but by making that choice, we went from a dual income home to a single one which means less money on summer camps and more creative planning.  So once Spring break is over I go into plan mode.  From museums to parks, festivals to random road trips our summer days are filled with memory making moments.  One of my family’s favorite summer musts is going to Musical Theatre Orange County’s (MTOC) summer production. I got turned on to MTOC in 2014 when I saw Tarzan The Musical.  From the jaw dropping sets and phenomenal acting I was hooked. As I was researching our summer activities I...

We were invited as a guest of the venue. The Sound of Music has always been one of my all time favorite movies that I enjoyed sharing with my daughter so when I heard that the musical production was coming to the Segerstrom, I was filled with excitement to be able to have her see a live version! The visual aspect of the film is just amazing, and I wasn’t sure of how they would translate the beautiful scenery in the film to the stage, but this brand new production of The Sound of  Music is directed by three-time Tony Award Winner Jack O’Brien, and it is absolutely remarkable.  According to director Jack O’Brien, “The Sound of Music has been in our ears for decades, but it might be time to look once more, and more closely, at this...

Epic Animal-Free Family Fun Circus

We attended as a guest of the venue Get ready for some fun under the big blue and yellow circus tent. Circus Vargas has debuted their new show iLUMINOUS, and it is fun and eye catching, and animal-free. They have successfully mixed death-defying stunts with stories, techno lights, and music to create a one of a kind show that everyone is sure to enjoy. During the show, guests will see some incredible acts. It’s a smaller circus, so, in my opinion, every seat in the house is a good seat. We had some fantastic seats that were in the front row of seats behind the ringside seats. For some of the higher acts like the Trapeze, I believe it is easier to see them from seats that are not right next to the circus ring. If you are used...

We attended as guests of SCTFA. Segerstrom Center for the Art’s (SCFTA) wonderful Family Discovery Series debuted a new family friendly production this month entitled Egg. I took my two girls (ages 3 and 6) for a Mommy Daughter date day, and it was the perfect way to spend a beautiful spring afternoon! Egg, performed by Cahoots NI, a professional children’s theater company based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is told through physical theatre, illusion and music. It is a funny, emotional, yet delightful story that tells of brotherhood, love, and leaving the nest, a theme that resonates as strongly with children as it does with adults. My girls got quite weepy at the scenes of the endearing brother birds leaving the comfort and routine of the nest and flying off to their own lives, a reality that even the youngest audience...

At first, I was hesitant to bring my 9-year-old with me to...

The Equestrian Masterpiece: Odysseo by Cavalia

We attended as a guest of the venue Have you have been wondering what the big white tent is off the 405 and Laguna Canyon Rd? Lucky for you, I’m here to tell you all about it. It is Normand Latourelle’s creation, Cavalia: Odysseo.  Who is Normand Latourelle you ask? Well besides being an artistic genius, he was also one of the four pioneers of a little show called Cirque du Soleil. He left Cirque du Soleil in the mid 90’s to try out new ventures. In 2003, Latourelle decided to create an experience to show the historical relationship between humans and horses. Through the years the show, then called  Voltige, evolved and became Cavalia, which by the way is a  fabricated word, inspired by the Spanish and French words for a horse (caballo and cheval) and the English word...

Behind the Scenes of Odysseo in Orange County

Earlier this week, I had the extreme honor of going to see a sneak peek of Odysseo by Cavalia.  I live near Laguna Canyon Road, so I have seen the pre-production of the show from the of the posting of the sign to the arrivals of the trailers, and then the erection of metal beams and finally the rising of the tent. Watching the preparation of Odysseo has been a part of my everyday life for close to a month. When I went to the preview and was driving up to the tent, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of it. The tent was so much larger than I had expected, but then again, of course, it would be, the tent’s height is equivalent to a ten story building. Walking into the tent, I feared that it would...

Idina Menzel’s Stellar Performance in IF/THEN

Let me begin by saying that this performance is not for children. With my daughter being one of the biggest fans of Idina Menzel that I know, I couldn’t wait to take her to see IF/THEN at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Unfortunately, I missed reading the reviews that stated that the performance is full of bad language and sexuality. Thankfully, I am more of a progressive mom, and realize that she’ll be exposed to things like this in her life, and it opened up for some healthy discussions on the car ride home. Just because the show is not for kids, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t see it. In fact, “IF/THEN” is ideal for your next date night or mom’s night out. Idina Menzel gave an epic performance that for everyone attending will never forget....

It took one hundred and ten semi-trailer trucks to transport the touring production to Irvine where guests will be invited to embark on an equestrian and acrobatic adventure featuring 65 horses and 45 humans. We were fortunate enough to be invited to attend the celebratory event where the big white tent was raised for the first time at the 405 and 133 freeway in the city of Irvine. The white tent stands 125 feet tall, is higher than the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland, and is 58,397 square feet. There is seating for 2,000 people surrounding a stage that is approximately 17,500 square feet, bigger than the Honda Center...

We attended as guest of SCFTA. The magic of Christmas has come alive with the American Ballet Theater’s (ABT) stunning performance of The Nutcracker at Segerstrom Hall. A long time family favorite, this classic story follows young Clara on a dreamlike adventure through fantastic scenery to find magical toy soldiers, sugar plum fairies, villainous mice, glittery snowflakes, and best of all, beautifully choreographed and executed ballet.  ABT’s newest Nutcracker, created by Alexei Ratmansky and featuring sets and costumes from Richard Hudson (Broadway’s Lion King) boasts a cast of more than 100 performers. Music by Peter Tchaikovsky with Pacific Symphony is the quintessential backdrop to the phenomenal dancers on stage.
