Once I was inside, I checked myself in, and all of the team members introduced themselves and gave me and name tag. Once I got to the studio, I sat down in a chair and then was given a bag that I was to decorate and a clipboard with my...

Getting Prepared for Summer Camping

Posted by on Apr 21, 2016 in Camp, Family, Featured, Giveaways, Shopping, Staycation, Travel | 66 comments

Sponsored We have tried camping a couple of times with our children but was never able to have a successful camping trip because of being unprepared. We never invested in a proper tent, camping stove or camping light. The result was a terrible camping experience that left us not wanting to camp ever again. Well, as our kids have been getting older, they continually ask us if we can go on a family camping trip, so we made the commitment to purchase the proper camping supplies at Kohl’s, and give it another try. Kohl’s has a great selection of camping supplies from tents to stoves making it an easy one-stop shopping destination to prepare for our weekend camping trip. We invested in a really nice (and pretty) Coleman eight-person tent, a Coleman 3-in-1 propane camping stove, and a Coleman...

Five Tips for Camping with Kids

Posted by on Jul 13, 2015 in Camp, Family, Featured, Staycation, Travel | 0 comments

Taking the kids camping can be one of the most exciting, fun and exhilarating vacations you’ve ever had…or one of the most frustrating, annoying and miserable ones. It all depends on setting your expectations and putting in the time to properly plan it. The most important lesson can be lifted from the Boy Scouts motto, “be prepared.” Having interacted with families seeking a camping adventure at Newport Dunes for more than 20 years, I have witnessed, firsthand, the trials and tribulations they face and I’ve developed some basic tips that will ensure that your entire family will be “happy campers”: Get Involved Include you children in the planning process and try a test run in the backyard. Teach the children how to pitch a tent, help them become familiar with the sounds of the outdoors, point out constellations, etc....

Pali Adventures Summer Camp Family Day

Sponsored It is the first year that we are sending one of our kids away to summer camp. I have been a little selfish and wanted to spend every minute of summer with my kids over the years. Now that my older son is thirteen, he is ready to “spread his wings” and leave home for summer camp. When making the decision to send my son to an overnight summer camp, I did a ton of research. After hours upon hours of research, everything kept leading me back to Pali Adventures. One of my biggest fears was his diet. My son has severe food allergies, and I have to be extra cautious when sending him somewhere where he’ll be eating without me or my husband present. Since he had attended a school trip to Pali, and they had handled...

Where can you take ballet, Pilates, piano and voice lessons, a painting class, and record a song? The answer lies behind the doors of the largest Arts center in Orange County: the Pacific Coast Center for the Arts (PCCA). Originally founded as Pacific Coast Academy of Dance (PCAD) in 2002, PCAD moved its studio from San Clemente to a state-of-the art 20,000 square foot facility on a quiet cul-de-sac in Mission Viejo. “Our expansion allowed us to support dancers of all levels (pre-professional, commercial and recreational), and all genres (classical, commercial, musical theatre),” explains Sandra Ishida Russell, executive director, PCCA. However, Ishida had a vision that would far exceed her dreams of dance. “We want to give back quality time to families who find themselves on the road more than in the home,” said Ishida. “We provide one safe, educational...

Choosing a Great Summer Camp to Meet your Child’s Needs

Posted by on Jun 3, 2015 in Camp, Summer | 0 comments

There are many things to think about when selecting a summer camp or summer school program. First off, parents have to consider price, availability, location, and other logistical factors. However, the real difficulty arises when trying to find the right fit for your child’s individual needs and desires. Ideally, a summer camp or summer school program will serve as an educational and social supplement to school. Additionally, summer camp programs serve as a valuable social introduction to the structure and collaboration that will be required in preschool and kindergarten.

 Sports and coordination

Sports and outdoor camps are a great way to get out the extra energy young children have. In addition, sports camps offer a good opportunity for children to increase their coordination skills. Activities such as soccer and dance will help kids improve their coordination and balance while learning...

The Dragon Institute Kids Kung Fu Program Creates Well-Rounded Children

Partnered Story The martial art of kung fu is not about showing off or winning trophies. It’s about learning how to protect yourself. It is a vital practice for children to learn, since the scourge of bullying is still an unfortunate reality from grade school to high school. Yet kung fu also goes beyond the realm of self-defense for kids. It serves as an interactive way to hone skills that will serve them well later in life – skills like discipline and focus, confidence and ambition. This belief is the cornerstone of the Kids Kung Fu classes at The Dragon Institute. It is a key reason why they have been recognized as the “Best Martial Arts in Orange County” by OC City Voter for four consecutive years, as well as the Dana Point Times 2014 Golden Lantern Award for...

First you are going to need a tent. Don’t have a tent? Don’t worry! Before we purchased a tent, we would create our own backyard tent. Head over to the Home Depot or Costco, and load up the car with cardboard boxes. Spend the afternoon building your own backyard tent out of the cardboard boxes. Once it is done being created, cover all the cracks with towels and blankets for insulation. Make...

Posted by on Aug 14, 2013 in Camp | 0 comments

Summer is full of beautiful weather that offers families a chance to live life to the fullest.  Here in Orange County, we are blessed with so many beautiful beaches and parks…it is just up to us to take advantage of them.  Our children are learning how to feel confident in the ocean; at nine and six, they are on the swim team and confident in competitive swimming.  We are working to build that confidence in the ocean and took a huge leap toward that goal yesterday with Pirate Coast Paddle. Our children took part in the day camp offered from 9am to noon and while they had paddle boarded with me last summer in Hawaii, this was their first independent experience.  I truly was not sure what to expect when I dropped them off; I found the cove comforting...

Introducing Young Kids to Stand Up Paddleboarding

Posted by on Jul 31, 2013 in Camp | 0 comments

Media Rates were received for Pirate Coast Paddle Summer Camp, but did not influence our opinions. We first started introducing our kids to standup paddleboarding back in May of 2012 after learning about Pirate Coast Paddle opening at Newport Dunes. We met with a group of friends for a fun day of paddling together. The dads and kids all gave paddleboarding their first try together followed by a picnic lunch on the beach. It was a relaxed day of family fun with friends. On the first visit to Pirate Coast Paddle, we attempted to get our youngest son Tyler out on the water without any luck. Since that first time paddleboarding with the kids, we have tried many times to get Tyler to go out on the boards. We were never able to introduce Tyler properly to standup paddleboarding...

First Summer Camp at Pirate Coast Paddle

Posted by on Jul 30, 2013 in Camp, Featured | 0 comments

Media Rates were received for Pirate Coast Paddle Summer Camp, but did not influence our opinions. I had told myself at the beginning of summer that I would not sign my kids up for any summer camp this year. The kids are growing up so fast, that I just want to spend every moment with them before I *blink* and they are running out the door to College. While my intentions were good, after two months without any breaks, it was clear that a week of summer camp would be not only good for the kids, but for me as a mom too. This was going to be my youngest first summer camp, and I wanted to send him somewhere where he was in smaller groups, and would be cared for like family, so I signed all of them...

Five Tips for Picking the Best Summer Camp

The weather is heating up, and it is time to start thinking about planning your kids summer camps for the year. Thinking about summer camp for my kids has always been a challenge for me. The only summer camp that I attended as a child was Camp Sherman with the Girl Scouts. Since my mom was a troop leader, it ended up being more like a small mother/daughter vacation with my friends. Although, I want for my kids to experience something that I never did as a child, I cannot help but want them to spend as much time with me while they are off for summer break. Every year, I set-out to plan great summer camps for my kids, and every year I end up keeping them home with me for the entire summer. Whether looking for a...
