There are so many inspiration moms in Orange County, and each month, we are thrilled to feature a different mom who is making a difference in our community. This month, we are featuring the OC Mom, Jami Rogers who resides with her family in Irvine. Tell us about your family? My husband, Adam, and I have two energetic, fantastically funny boys. Isaac is 11 years old and Caleb is 9 years old. I also have two boy dogs, Maverick and Kevin. Yep, there are a lot of boys in my house! What do you love the most about our community? The only thing stronger than a community of women is a community of mothers. Mothers are the driving force and backbone for the betterment of their family’s life. I have learned so many unique approaches to problems and new...

I’m am a local professional photographer at Jen CYK Photography and excited to be a new columnist at the OC Mom Blog. I’ll be blogging regularly to spotlight you amazing Mamas. I hope these joyful stories inspire you! #spotlightingOCmoms Today we are featuring Kara Kent who lives in Seal Beach. Kara healed her sister’s broken heart. When doctor after doctor told Katie that she couldn’t carry her own children, her lifelong dream of being a mother could have been shattered. Kara had watched her sister suffer from the effects of Lupus since the age of six, and Kara thought there was no way she could help, until now. With ultimate courage, Kara gracefully volunteered to carry Katie’s baby by being a surrogate. Kara spent months injecting herself with the hormones it would take to carry this little one, going...

How Girls Scouts Have Impacted an OC Family

Posted by on Sep 24, 2015 in Family, Hot Topics, OC Mom Spotlight, Parenting | 0 comments

“I would love for my daughters to join Girl Scouts. Be a leader, you say?  Well, maybe…” Little did I know that saying “maybe” to volunteering that day would turn into seven memorable years of Girl Scouting with three of my daughters. And one more kindergartner is just starting this year! Part of the reason I signed my first daughter up for Girl Scouts was because honestly, I thought she would be glued to my side forever! Girl Scouts offered her chances to take risks and challenge herself, with the support of her troop and leaders – opportunities like going to a horse camp and learning to ride and care for a creature much larger than herself.  Or feeling the pride of earning her Girl Scout Bronze award as she worked with children with cognitive disabilities. These experiences built her self-confidence so much that now she leads...

Super Fit Mom Offers Tips to Beat Postpartum Weight Gain

Posted by on Jun 14, 2015 in Family, Fitness, OC Mom Spotlight | 0 comments

You are all too familiar with the dreaded phrase frustratingly whispered amongst mommies around the world (cue: Jaws theme song): postpartum weight gain. Instead of that tight waist, there’s now an extra layer of fat that reminds you of a small baby whale. Your thighs also seem to have expanded much like that of the Pillsbury Doughboy. Let’s not forget about the shoe size. The previous, normal shoe size has now reached an epic size known only to Amazon women. Just like your little purses have been replaced by larger tote-styled bags, those cute little dresses have also been traded in for stretchy yoga pants and other “active wear.” And this, my dear mom friends is the best you can hope for, besides, maybe getting a solid four hours of sleep. But perhaps there’s an inkling of hope for those...

Posted by on Apr 2, 2015 in Education, Family, Featured, OC Mom Spotlight | 0 comments

Mary Bailey is a single mom to Chase, her 13-year-old son who was diagnosed with autism when he was just a toddler. In her blog, she shares the life-changing decision she recently made to home school Chase. Together, they’ve also set up to share their journey and to encourage people to follow their dreams. Why I Chose to Home School My Son Growing up the seventh of my parent’s 14 children taught me so many things that prepared me to be Chase’s mom. Lots of simple things come to mind, but the two overarching lessons are first, that each person—no matter the gifts and imperfections—has a place and a purpose to fulfil in this world; and second, that life isn’t easy, fair, or painless, but with the right attitude, the willingness to work and learn, and the right...

OCSA Foundation Arts Enrichment Program Jumpstart Student’s Talent

Posted by on Mar 4, 2015 in Education, Family, Featured, OC Mom Spotlight, Parenting | 0 comments

Do you believe your child has a gift in the arts, such as writing, music, dance, voice, drama, culinary or visual arts? I know as a parent that is a loaded question. After all, doesn’t every parent consider their child amazingly talented? Well, parent Abby Maharaj felt exactly this way when she noticed her daughter Maya never left home without a book or journal, and teachers were consistently praising Maya’s writing abilities. However, Maya was somewhat leery in following a similar path of her older brother in creative writing as a student in the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) Creative Writing Conservatory. “The prospect of trying to measure up to her brother’s success was a little unnerving for Maya, despite all the positive comments she received about her writing from teachers, friends and family. We decided to...

Chef Geeta Bansal of Clay Oven in Irvine was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. Devastated, she began doing her research and elected to start a trial for a new type of treatment that delivered a single powerful dose of radiation in one session, followed by a surgery and other therapies. The severe side effects of those treatments began to take their toll. So she turned to Ayurvedic cooking to counteract them. The anti-carcinogenic properties of turmeric was first on her list. Also, by taking Fenugreek, she was able to keep her hair from falling out. She used cumin & coriander when making soups to help her quickly regain her energy. To offset nausea, ginger & lemon were top on her list and she incorporated proteins like tofu and lentils to counteract anemia, low blood pressure & loss of...
