Posted by on Apr 20, 2015 in Activities, Earth Day, Events, Featured, Holiday, Hot Topics | 0 comments

Children across the nation will celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22nd. The one-day event will focus on living sustainable lifestyles in order to treasure our precious natural resources. While we encourage everyone to celebrate with their children on April 22nd, families are invited to continue educating their children at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. In anticipation of Earth Day, our family attended their special Earth Day celebration earlier this month. Hundreds of local parents and children came together to learn about sustainability and easy, beneficial ways that children can make an impact on our Earth. Children participated in Earth Day crafts, learned about water conservation and ate delicious food from Chipotle. Chipotle has sponsored a learning station at The Ecology Center where children can learn about the importance of knowing where their food is coming from...

Have you visited your local Goodwill lately? I recently attended an event at the Lake Forest Goodwill during Earth Day, and was very pleasantly surprised by their transformations! Did you know they actually have 2 stores at the location (23740 El Toro Road)? On the left-hand side is the “main” Goodwill store, filled with racks of gently used clothing and shoes for men, women, and children, tons of glassware and knick-knacks, some furniture, and other home items. On the right-hand side is the “Keepers”, which has been recently redone as the 2nd “OC Goodwill Boutique”. This side is filled with brand name and designer items, mostly clothing for women, some shoes and bags, and men’s items as well. I also learned a lot of interesting facts about Goodwill that are worth sharing with you all! Did you know that...

Healing Your Family Naturally on Earth Day

I love nature. I love sharing it with my kids. If you have been following my parenting journey online over the years, then you already know how passionate I am about sharing the beauty of our world with my children. We love to splash in the waves, wander through fields of wildflowers and connect with wildlife. I may not be a perfect parent, but when it comes to teaching my children about the importance of caring for our Earth and Environment, I have got it right – that I know! When I first had children, all of my friends were doing the same thing – feeding their children processed foods (chicken nuggets/Macaroni and Cheese). As a young mom, I didn’t know better and fed my child a diet that came from boxes, containers and jars. What I didn’t realize...

We all love it. We all live in it. It’s our Earth – our environment – our home. It’s hard to believe Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970 nationwide. It is now observed in 192 countries, and is celebrated by more than a billion people every year – the largest secular event of its kind. The point of Earth Day? This is a day we can change a human behavior in order to make our world a more sustainable place to live. As a parent, this is a great time to make a change in your everyday life – recycle more, bring your reusable bag to the grocery store, use a reusable coffee cup. Be a role model for your child in helping care for our planet. Earth Day is officially April 22, however, if you’re looking for...

Giving Back to the Earth with Homemade Ant Farms

It is important to me that I teach my children that Earth Day is not something that we should celebrate one day out of the year, but every day. The best way that I have been able to encourage my children to care and appreciate our environment in through gardening. We love caring for the Earth by planting fruits and vegetables every year in our backyard. During the past six months, I have let our personal situations get in the way of my commitment to doing this with my children. With baseball practice, school band and other activities, our garden has suffered. About two weeks ago, I brought the kids back into the garden to start getting it ready for our Summer planting. When we were working in the garden, we learned that many animals had turned our garden...

Earth Day is coming on Monday, April 22nd. This is a day to enjoy going outside, getting close to nature and admiring all the beauty that surrounds us. On Earth Day, I am planning a family movie night where we will watch the new DisneyNature film “The Wings of Life.” The “Wings of Life” is a special movie that teaches children the importance of caring for the flowers and the pollinators who make it possible for us to get food from the Earth. Before watching the film, I had not idea how big the importance is of pollinators to the survival of our planet. “Wings of Life” is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD for families to add to their video collections. In honor of the release of this educational film and Earth Day, we are happy to host...
